When I started working as a CAN, as well as volunteering in the health care field, I understood that the work involved included helping residents in activities of daily living. What I found out after I started working was how much of an impact the job makes on people. When I was volunteering to help a woman go grocery shopping I did not think much of it. However, when I came into her home and started putting her groceries away she started tearing up. I found out that she and her husband used to always go grocery shopping together and would later play a game that involved putting the groceries away.…

Our Lecturer Stewart Neilson in his opening introduction gave us a broad outline of the topics he would be covering in the following weeks, such as the history of madness, mental health, madness and creativity and service users’ perspectives and rights. For me, the most meaningful aspect of his lecture was when he touched on the area of children with autism in the 1940’s compared to the 21st century. Here we see a typical example of how the Medical…

As I will be working with families of diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, values, and cultures I will need to recognize that each families view of a child will vary, therefore each child’s need will vary as well.…
