Reflective Essay To AP Calculus

When I saw AP Calculus AB on my schedule for 11th grade, I expected to like it as much as any other math class. However, I was wrong. I loved it. I loved learning how concepts I had learned in previous classes were useful. I loved the childlike wonder I would experience whenever a mathematical revelation was made. I loved the thought that I was calculating numbers that gave answers about how the universe operates. Furthermore, I found a subject that helped me to capture my curiosity about the world and invest it into my learning. Throughout the year, I found myself in awe of the fact that calculus is able to infallibly explain the laws of motion in the universe; it’s incredible how many scenarios calculus is able to describe. For instance, the launch of Sputnik or any other spacecraft would be impossible without the ability to find the precise measurement of …show more content…
More specifically, it was so fascinating to see how formulas I had been using since elementary school were founded on the basis of calculus; the mathematics used to find the volume of a solid formed by revolving the region bounded by the equation y equals the square root of the quantity r-squared minus x-squared, where r is a positive constant, and the x-axis from -r to r can be simplified down to the widely-known formula for the volume of a sphere, enforcing the fact that calculus has been able to facilitate the gathering of information about the workings of the world. Additionally, calculus has given me a sense of direction regarding the field of study I will choose in the future. My interests had previously become divided among many different subjects and I had very little basis on which to begin making decisions. Even though I’m not completely decided yet, I now know that a major where calculus is integral is a course of study that I’d be passionate about

Junior year, I took Geometry while everyone was in Pre-Calculus. Even though I didn’t have enough time to catch up to the rest of my class, I still tried. Over the summer, I took Algebra II at my local community college and passed, thus I was able to enroll in Precalculus during Senior year. Although I wasn’t able to take Calculus during my senior year, I was still content with the fact that I tried and as far as I could. I was happy with where I was.…

Many people have different opinions about what they think about math. For instance, I looked up opinions people said about math and most of them were negative. One person stated: “I know a lot of people don’t like it. For me, I was good at the subject, but I didn’t really enjoy it.” In the story “Why is Math so important for kids to learn?” by Elise Wile, the author’s attitude toward Math is interested for these reasons: (1) she explains how it teaches logical and critical thinking, (2) she explains how it teaches life skills, and (3) she also explains how it supports continuing education and careers.…

Chinenyenwa Amaechi Dahiya AP Calculus 16 October 2015 Every student who has ever asked an older adult for help with their math homework is very familiar with the phrase “This is not the type of math I did growing up”. The mathematics we have today greatly differs from that of earlier generations and time periods due to the dynamic nature of this field of study. Throughout history, many important individuals have contributed to the field of mathematics and have helped develop the theories, postulates and mathematical rules which are widely accepted today. From the quadratic formula to the trigonometric functions, these people have revolutionized the way we view mathematics in unimaginable ways.…

I always found refuge in math’s exactness, so I poured myself into the structure and the problems. But in the cycle of rearranging and factoring and calculating, I yearned for a unified understanding of the concepts we were learning. My solution: forging an appreciation of why everything in mathematics worked. There may be arbitrary starting points and definitions, but once I understood that everything we were learning extended concepts that extended concepts that extended this very groundwork of mathematics, it illuminated the poetic brilliance mathematics is: everything flowed together, and I carried out each procedure with purpose and…

The three sample pieces I chose to include in my portfolio are an argumentative English essay, a book report written for an AP science class, and a lab report. These pieces illustrate my proficiency in multiple subject areas including research and argumentation. The first piece presented in my portfolio is an argumentative essay written for my AP Language and Composition course. The given essay, written by Edward O. Wilson, and AP prompt were taken from the 2009 AP Language exam, found on the College Board website. The prompt instructed students to “write an essay in which you analyze how Wilson’s use of satire illustrates the unproductive nature of such discussions.”…

My second year of high school was difficult for me as I had taken on my first AP class and I had learned that my aunt had been diagnosed with cancer. That year took a toll on my grades, overall GPA, and class ranking, which all went down because I focused all of my attention solely on my one AP class. I would also be constantly worried about my aunt and I would catch myself drifting off just thinking about her, hoping that she was okay. Junior year, I was determined to obtain a higher GPA and a better class ranking, and as a result I would skip out on family events when I had homework to do…

This letter is intended to help me figure out what skills I have learned in this class, and what skills I was lacking and had already obtained coming into this class. This is my first year in college, but I had many of my teachers in high school that prepared me for the rigorous calculus course. I took calculus AB my senior year of high school, so I had all of the skills I needed prior to entering this class. I knew the Limit, Derivative, and Anti-Derivative topics, and in depth.…

At my high school, the highest math class offered is AP Calculus AB. But, the saying goes that if you can teach something, then you thoroughly understand it; in that case, I consider myself proficient in the topics addressed in the AB level. For that reason, I have decided to engage in an independent study of Calculus BC to continue to challenge myself. The textbook issued by my school already contains the topics for both levels. So, in addition to the assignments of my regularly scheduled classes, I spend a few hours per week working toward proficiency in BC level…

Fundamental Theorem of Calculus The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus evaluate an antiderivative at the upper and lower limits of integration and take the difference. This theorem is separated into two parts. The first part is called the first fundamental theorem of calculus and states that one of the antiderivatives of some function may be obtained as the integral of the function with a variable bound of integration. The second part of the theorem, called the second fundamental theorem of calculus, states that the integral of a function over some interval can be computed by using any one of its infinitely many antiderivatives.…
