Reflective Essay: Service With Justicecorps

Improved Essays
Service with JusticeCorps is a natural fit for me, as the program synthesizes my primary interests: social justice and language. By craft, I am hyper-aware of the force of words; I want to build on my experience as a writer to use my skills in communication for the public interest.
I believe that uncommon results necessitate uncommon effort, and this belief is reflected in my academic history. I know that to make an impact as a corps member, I will need to balance multiple responsibilities, and I have a history of successfully doing just that. By taking a maximum credit-load, I graduated college one year early while simultaneously working as a TA, tutoring at the campus learning center, serving in the community, and writing a senior thesis.

The head of the literature department initially viewed my proposal, a 50+ page project on volcanoes in Emily Dickinson, with skepticism; at our thesis proposal meeting, she suggested that I go in a more conventional direction. I, however, was confident in the validity of my research, and I was ready to exert myself intellectually to produce original research. Since I could find only one journal article explicitly dealing with my topic, and scholarly books covered the topic only in a cursory manner, I had to accept making mistakes as opportunities for learning. My capacity to learn by doing, coupled with my sheer curiosity, will be undoubtedly of use to me as a fellow, especially in applying material learned in training. As my project earned an A-grade, and I finished the year with departmental honors, I clearly possess strong communication skills; I am excited to use these skills, collaboratively with other fellows, for the promotion of social

I want to work with JusticeCorps in particular, above all other service organizations, because I want to work with people (both members of my team and members of the public) to ensure consistent administration of justice; I believe the most impactful work is done on the human level: instructing, collaborating, learning from other’s experiences; JusticeCorps shares this belief, that through team efforts and through clear communication, legal proceedings can be accessible for all. The issue of accessibility of legal language matters to me, because I have seen firsthand how inability to access language correlates to inability to access opportunity. During a fellowship with Great Oaks Charter, I worked closely with Ketlyn, an English-learner and…

Brian’s lecture was really interesting, and got me thinking about the kinds of social justice that I am passionate about. I am really not one for participating in rallies or anything like that, so I figured I was not right for social justice, but after reading in On Being a Therapist I realized social justice can be really varied. He talks about how he has a foundation for helping girls in Nepal to stay in school, because many families who cannot afford school for all of their children sometimes sell their daughters to brothels (Kottler, 2010). I am passionate about women’s rights and it would be incredible to be able to be involved in some kind of social justice that works to advocate for women not just in America but all over the world. But again, this is where cultural competency and understanding addressing frameworks comes into play: equality and empowerment does not look the same to me as it does to women in India, Japan, or…

Teddy Roosevelt once said that nothing worth having comes easy. With this in mind, I have actively spent my high school years working to ensure that my success and achievements are fruits of hard work and perseverance, rather than sheer luck. These past four years, I have dedicated my young mind to absorbing the valuable knowledge that pools before me in my rigorous AP courses. In addition, I also invested a good portion of my time into my school’s band program. Although balancing academics and such a demanding extracurricular activity was difficult, I managed to find the time to also participate in very rewarding organizations such as National Honor Society, among others.…

Becky, You made some great suggestions in regards to reforming the juvenile justice system. I agree that it is important for youth to get the proper education, vocational training, and therapy (individual and family) in order to successfully reintegrate and be productive members of society. The idea of a criminalized justice court would probably help in making the juvenile realize how the real process goes when a crime is committed as an adult and may deter them from breaking the law in the future. All of your ideas were wonderful and made a great deal of sense. Great post.…

As citizens it is our jobs to evaluate every candidate’s proposals so that we can determine which candidate has the “right” or “good” solution to the nation’s problems. Some voters focus only on the consequences of these potential policies while others focus on the consequences and other factors that influence the duties, rights, and rules of the people. The three areas that can easily be discussed in terms of consequences or duties and rights include education, health care, and criminal justice potential policies. In order to find a “right” or “good” solution for both education and health care, I think it is best to focus on only the consequences of the proposals which is known as Consequentialism. However, potential criminal justice policy’s…

“The magic happens when you step outside your comfort zone.” This proverb sums up everything I went through when I recently attended the Air Force Academy’s Summer Seminar in July. While there, I was pushed well beyond my limits. We, the attendees, did strenuous physical training sessions at roughly a mile above sea level, woke up before the sun rose, attended sample classes, and studied tons of military knowledge while learning about the Air Force Academy and the admission process. It was truly a challenge being there, and I loved every minute of it!…

I was unfamiliar with the process of choosing the order of courses that would transition me to graduation. As a result, I took several non-required courses, and I even took some of the needed courses, for my degree, out of order. Needless to say, I hit an academic wall that lasted five long semesters. It would have been easier for me to change majors for the sake of graduation, but being in such a predicament only sharpened my perseverance and molded my determination. While these academic complications seemed unbearable at the time, my senior year turned out to be my most challenging year.…

Justice must first be defined, in terms of legally and socially. It applies to every area of our lives and affects how successful society is. Justice means something different to everyone on a more personal level, but as a whole, it must mean something to us all very specifically. I began to question what justice truly means. “The Oxford English Dictionary defines the ‘just’ person as one who typically ‘does what is morally right’ and is disposed to ‘giving everyone his or her due,’ offering the word ‘fair’ as a synonym” (Wayne P. Pomerleau, Western Theories of Justice).…

Analysis of the Juvenile Justice System and Dipartites amongst Minorities The United States incarcerates more youths than any other development country; approximately 2 million juveniles are arrested annually in the United States (Barnet et al. 2014). Although juveniles are protected against cruel and unusual punishment by the Eighth Amendment, many states in the U.S. are creating and implementing new laws designed to be more stringent with the juveniles. These new laws range anywhere from setting curfews to trying a minor as an adult. Studies show that not only has there has also been an increase in the number of minority juveniles being arrested, but minority youths are more likely to receive harsher punishments as well (Mears, Pickett, & Mancini, 2015). Specifically, African American youths are roughly 5 times more likely, and Latino and American Indian adolescents are 3 times more likely, to be incarcerated than white minors (Barnet et al, 2014).…
