I believe that uncommon results necessitate uncommon effort, and this belief is reflected in my academic history. I know that to make an impact as a corps member, I will need to balance multiple responsibilities, and I have a history of successfully doing just that. The head of the literature department initially viewed my proposal, a 50+ page project on volcanoes in Emily Dickinson, with skepticism; at our thesis proposal meeting, she suggested that I go in a more conventional direction. I, however, was confident in the validity of my research, and I was ready to exert myself intellectually to produce original research. Since I could find only one journal article explicitly dealing with my topic, and scholarly books covered the topic only in a cursory manner, I had to accept making mistakes as opportunities for learning. My capacity to learn by doing, coupled with my sheer curiosity, will be undoubtedly of use to me as a fellow, especially in applying material learned in training. As my project earned an A-grade, and I finished the year with departmental honors, I clearly possess strong communication skills; I am excited to use these skills, collaboratively with other fellows, for the promotion of social
