Reflective Essay Regarding My Grade For Fall Fair

Improved Essays
Hi Mrs. Ortiz,

Hope all is well and that you are enjoying this Monday off.

I had some concern regarding my grade for fall quarter.

First, when final grades were posted I saw that I had received a 95/100 for section participation. I was a little unsure as to why because I had gone to discussion, I participated frequently, and did my readings every week. I emailed my TA, Ariana, on December 24th to see what I could have done differently in order to not have been deducted 5 points, but she responded five days later saying she was traveling and would look into during week 1. This last Friday, the 12th, she responded saying that I received a 95% for my "superior work" in section, but a 100% merits an "extraordinary capacity." While I understand the expectation and reasoning behind each letter grade, I do believe that my effort and work in section merits that 100%. For example, every week I type out summaries of each article so that I can better recall the important ideas and use this to facilitate my commentary during discussions in section.

When reading through the comments and critiques Ariana gave me, I felt as if the 79% I received was not a fitting grade for the content of my paper. I took my questions regarding my paper to my TA as soon as possible, but due to the fire week 9 the soonest I was able to speak to her was office hours of week 10. Since everyone was busy trying to advice for the history paper, I was not able to spend as much time discussing my concerns with the literature paper as I would have liked. I was able to speak to Ariana for a little bit, but she did not really directly answer my questions and instead talked about what else I could have

Through the history and evolution of education, mentors have struggled over the best way to challenge their students to reach their peak. Although there are countless methods that have been debated and finessed, the use of the traditional grading scale seems to be a large source of current disputes. Some teachers argue that such a fixed system of testing and ordering pits students against each other, creating an air of competition that should not exist in the classroom. It gives a child a number and tells them how “good” they are. Other educators say that this is not necessarily detrimental.…

I remember the first time I wrote an essay that was being graded at the college level. This was in my junior year when I took AP Language and Composition, our first essay was a rhetorical analysis essay from a very old excerpt that used old english and was very hard to read. When I first started reading the passage I started to get nervous because I didn't understand what the text was saying but then I started to annotate and the passage began to make sense. I found many rhetorical strategies that the author used and I then began to outline the essay in my head.…

Since the first day, time has been flying really fast. Starting a fresh new day, meeting the same teachers and same old friends, I still cannot imagine that I am now a senior! In my senior year, there will definitely be a lot of challenges and obstacles for me to conquer, but I believe that as long as I do everything step by step, I can beat down the difficulties in this senior year. When I was in junior year, I often heard last year’s seniors told me how hard is it to come up with a senior project topic, and they kept on reminding me to start thinking of my topic and finding my mentors. Luckily, I had research method class last year, so I knew how to do my APA style references and I had many presentations experiences last year.…

After my completion of AP English junior year, I felt better than ever about my writing. Although it is okay to be confident in your skills, I entered this year with a sense of satisfaction and no desire to take my writing abilities to the next level. Due to this lack of ambition, I haphazardly threw my first week essay together and genuinely thought my teacher would be in awe over my skills- as I was only a senior entering a college course. When I received my grade, I was shocked to see that I had been placed into the scoring category of “weak”, and my teacher ultimately wasn’t so pleased after all. After some reflection, I reached the conclusion that my teacher was right- I deserved that five out of twenty.…

This semester seemed to pass by quickly, I believe the main reason I did not make an A in this class was due to the fact that even though I had good intentions in the beginning of the semester to go to tutoring I did not realize how demanding intermediate algebra was going to be. I had to attend class twice a week and classes were four hours long it was not physically exhausting , but it was mentally exhausting. So, as a result, I did not go to tutoring for English when I should have to have my papers critiqued for mistakes. Eight weeks into this semester I found out I did not pass my intermediate algebra class which left me frustrated and slightly unmotivated with all my classes. I put in at least forty plus hours a week on the intermediate algebra which did not help at all in the end.…

According to the Washington Post, data has proven that there is a direct correlation between high school grade point average and the average annual adulthood earnings. According to Michael T. French, he director of the health economics research groups at the University of Miami, said “A one-unit increase in your GPA has a very sizable impact on your education and earnings.” It is for that reason that we must affirm today’s resolution to mandate a national minimum grade point average. The first point I would like to bring up today is that a national minimum grade point average would encourage students to lean more and earn a better living later in life. For every one point increase in high school grade point average earnings in adulthood increase twelve percent for men and fourteen percent for women.…

Freshman year of high school is scary for anyone, the enormous transition from being a top dog at middle school, back to an underclassman; wondering if your high school teachers will be as unforgiving as your 8th grade teacher’s descriptions, or even just that uncertainty that comes along with any major change. As a homeschooler entering school system for the first time, and having completely skipped 8th grade, it was terrifying. I had no idea what to expect, I worried about being behind the other students, or having missed something in my homeschooling curriculum, even interacting with other kids was all unfamiliar. It definitely didn’t help that, at 13, I was the youngest person in the building. Just two days into the school year, I discovered that P-AP world…
