INTRODUCTION Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been and are critical drivers of social mobility and social change in the Black community. Since their founding they have had missions to provide access and opportunity for Black people when they were excluded or denied admittance elsewhere. Today, HBCUs continue close the societal and economic gaps that exist for Black people in America. The role that I play in Civic Mirror is a capitalist. A capitalist is defined as “a person who believes that property and economic production should be controlled by private citizens and not the government. My objective is to own more valuable property and possesses more cash than any other citizen in the country (HL District). Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Under the Surface The word literacy can cause an overwhelming amount of stress in one's mind. Growing up, I have felt the pressure weigh on me even when I began to think of the word literacy. This thought of pressure and stress has caused me to become unmotivated when being motivated is the key element to reading and writing.
