Intercultural Communication: A Personal Narrative

From the moment I was accepted into this program, I have been in shock. As soon as the plan put down its wheels and I landed in London It hit me we were in London, but not as hard as I thought it would. London at first impression was they drive fast and it was scary when crossing a road because I still do this day do not know which way to look so I look both ways. The ambulance sirens and are ten times louder than any United States one. London was not what I expected, but better. The dogs all run around with no leashes and are surprisingly well trained, even the deer are bigger and are not afraid of humans. The way of life from transportation, values, and food are all different, but the first week of the semester prepared me for this and …show more content…
In Italy, I used a lot of body language. I found that not a lot of people spoke English there. My server and waiters at restaurants did, but none of the locals could speak it at all. Using hand signals and trying to speak some of the language helped a lot. I learned a lot from other cultures. The way they talk and just go about their day. In Spain, lunch is their biggest meal. They also do not come to your table often t see how you are doing which is nice. I never felt rushed at all. The waiter in Spain even helped us with the menu when deciding what to eat. In Dublin, everyone mostly spoke English, which was a nice and easy to communicate where we were going or trying to get. In Madrid no one asks where the bathrooms are in restaurants it just should be assumed they are in the basement floor in the back to the right. I would never have thought that was something to just be assumed. In addition, when it comes to personal space I also noticed in the dating section that people are very much affectionate. So personal space and PDA are not a problem here since I have seen many people make out while on the Tube and around town. It is a norm since no one looks at them, but I tend to feel slightly uncomfortable. In the United States, at least the situations that I have seen people usually do not make out in wide-open public places or else people stare. People are not afraid of personal affection at …show more content…
I have grown and become more independent; I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone multiple times and have tried new things. I felt prepared coming to London, but some things you con not prepare for, but only experience for yourself. I am proud of myself to have stay connected with my friends and family back at home, but have also adapted to many different cultures while being here. I have never flown out of the country before, and after this trip, I think I will be doing it again very soon. So far, I have been to Rome, Venice, Dublin, Cork, Madrid, and Barcelona. I want to even go back to some of the places I have been and see new places such as Paris, and Tuscany, Santorini. I have set me on my bucket list to go to those places and sooner rather than later, and I know I will. One thing the book did not prepare me for was how much I would fall in love with all these different places and want to see more, experience

As technology advances, people are now able to instantly communicate with people around the world in seconds. Our communities, that were once culturally isolated or being very homogeneous in character, are now becoming more culturally and ethnically diverse. While this change can be beneficial for a society, it can also present a wide variety of challenges that can impede communication and understanding. For nurses, it is especially important that they have cultural competence. Cultural competence is best described as “the integration ok knowledge, attitudes, and skills that enhance cross-cultural communication and appropriate interactions with others” (Black, 346).…

It might be the biggest cliché in the world: girl goes abroad with family, experiences new, crazy adventures, and happily returns home with self-discovery, and memorable, yet hilarious stories. It was basically the plot of National Lampoon’s European Vacation, where the family encounters one challenge after another as they travel through England, France, and Germany, except it was my family. Although there were various obstacles throughout the trip, I learned a lot about life: culture, history, food, and most importantly, perspective and the simple necessities. Despite the overuse of the saying ‘life-changing experience,’ it definitely taught me that the best vacation is with family. After spending three weeks out of a suitcase, rotating through…

I've always loved different cultures and tried to surround myself in as many as possible however I could. This was usually me trying to learn on my own from the internet, music and movies, but I was still missing that X factor that really made me indulge in other cultures. As soon as I walked onto Swarthmore's campus I felt that X factor. Sitting in the info session and taking the tour, I truly felt at home. The small diverse campus allows for people of completely different backgrounds and cultures to have real relationships that they might not have even noticed anywhere else in the world.…

Going through small private schools in a little town since I was in kindergarten has set me up for very few cultural experiences but my parents never wanted my siblings and I to grow up like this. When my family goes on vacation my mom always tries to fully submerge us in the culture around us. For example, a few years ago, my family and I went on a vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed in a nice resort and it was never necessary to leave the property if you didn’t want to. Most people never did.…

One would be body language in business protocol. The textbook points to how those in Japan bow versus shaking hands and how “Latin Americans are generally very physical and outgoing in their expressions and body language” (Carpenter & Sanjyot, 2013). They may find bowing or just shaking hands odd or standoffish; they will embrace or even give you a kiss on the cheek. When thinking of a Latin American meeting someone from Japan, there would definitely be a challenge as you’re talking about two cultures on the opposite end of the spectrum. One should probably never embrace or kiss a business man or woman from Japan.…

Usually, there's a moment in life where I experience home in places I've visited.…

The relationship I chose to analyze for my interpersonal communication paper was the relationship I had with my ex-girlfriend Laura. We met in high school through mutual friends and we dated throughout my junior and senior years. Communication problems and trust issues eventually were too big of a barrier to knock down and our relationship ended there. The main concepts I chose to analyze about my previous relationship were Personal Language, Nonverbal Communication, Proximity, the Social Penetration Theory, and lastly Relationship Threats. Personal Language shows your true self and is how you express your individuality and it is also more common in a private setting.…
