Imagine sitting at home and suddenly everything starts shaking. Things are falling around you and you panic, thinking to yourself, what do I do? You may ask yourself what just happened? You just experienced an earthquake. An earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, which can sometimes cause great destruction depending on the magnitude, because of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action. Using the National Geographic article Latest Earthquakes and How Earthquakes Work, I learned a lot of additional information. The article explains when the last earthquake was, which was February 16, 2018 and where it was, located in Mexico. I also learned over half of the earthquakes fall along the Pacific Ocean. If someone wanted basic information of earthquakes and how it works, they could be educated through this article. A different twist to Earthquakes was learning how they made a positive impact on the environment. Laurie Breener wrote How Do Earthquakes Positively Affect the Environment on March 15, 2018. She explained when earthquakes happen that cause tsunamis, the tsunami creates new beaches and new plant life. However, the only information she had was from the UC Santa Barbara’s Marine Science Institute (MSI) had researched those facts. MSI claimed new beaches had shown up that weren’t there before and new sand dunes with plants started arriving that were also not there before. This article was informational; however, it didn’t have a lot of evidence supporting what she claimed MSI researched. She based her information off the earthquake that happened in 2012. I would have liked to see a newer earthquake that made a positive impact on the Earth. *Need to cite …show more content…

Seeing the death toll and the cost for repairs, I am hoping in the future we can make better buildings to help sustain earthquakes. Reading about how earthquakes have a positive impact on the earth is interesting too. I never knew that they could cause new beaches and new plants to life. Using my first article, I gained knowledge that I didn’t know before. I didn’t know when the latest earthquake was. I also didn’t know what strengths there was. I knew there was different category magnitudes, but I just thought it was 1-9. It also relates to my life because I know how they conduct earthquake information and where most of the earthquakes occur. It was also interesting to see how many happen in a year or per day. Earthquake Tracker is a useful source to see how many have happened. In the last 7 days, more than 300 earthquakes have happened. Knowing they happen so frequently prepares you for them as well. Although majority of them do not do large amount of damage, it can still shake your house and you can feel

A tsunami is a seismic sea wave. Displacement of water forms a sequence of waves and this generally happens in an ocean or a large lake. Tsunamis are different because normal waves are caused by wind or tides, which is actually generated by the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun. According to Source 1, the first recorded tsunami was back in 7000-6000 BCE and this was in Portugal but the primary cause is unknown. Since then there have been many tsunamis that have caused damage, two of the moderately recent ones were the 2004 Indian ocean tsunami and the 2011 Tohoku tsunami.…
