Reflective Essay On Bluebelts

The Past: It's been quite a road to get this achievement. I've been taking karate classes for ten years. Throughout this time period, I've gotten 16 belts, taken 9 tests, taken three different classes for different age levels, and the dojo has changed locations 3 times. As a four year old, I was shy, scared, sensitive, bad with change, and a bit of a coward. Taking these classes has helped me to learn confidence and determination. I grew in so many powerful ways and I feel that I wouldn't know how to protect myself if it wasn't for my instructors, fellow students, and even the times I fell down or got hit. Though belts are often shown the be for show and showing off rank, I feel that it shows a sign of how hard I've worked and how far I've come in not only learning martial arts, but also in improving myself as a whole.

The Present:

When I was younger, I had passion for karate, but somewhere in the middle of my education, I started to loose the flames a bit. When I thought about the black belt at the end of the journey, I continued to push forward until the passion came back. I admit that the black belt was once a symbol of the thing truly keeping me in the classes for a little while. Now however, I feel relief. For the past year, I've been training my butt off, trying my hardest to do the best I possibly can until I reach my goal. The black belt also symbolizes a new responsibility. I will soon be teaching children and even some adults. I will soon be relied on to spread my knowledge to those seeking it. And though I feel a sense of deep achievement, I know that I'm not done

Every year, around April, my school gives out an award called Top 100. This academic award is given to the top twenty-five students of each class. Ever since my freshman year I have received this award. Some believe that most of the people that are Top 100 do not deserve it because the difficulty of their classes is not taken into accountability. Others believe the reward is just irrelevant, but this award is very important to me because to me it exemplifies my hard work.…

I would say that achieving the level of black belt is liberating in a way, because not only is it a regression to the basics, it removes the material aspect of the game. Learning karate transcends from a race to the next colour, to an intimate experience of the self. This is something I experienced when I got my black belt three years ago. I feel like at that point, learning Kata was not a step towards getting my next belt; it was learning kata for the sake of learning it. Rather than extrinsically enjoying learning, which involves enjoying the end goal of an action, it became intrinsic enjoyment, which is the enjoyment of the action…

Though there is one thing that I have also remembered Master West saying when someone in our dojo received a Black Belt, he said that’s this is only the beginning of a new journey to reach greater heights and that await furthermore and more. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any more exams to reach the higher rank of black belt, no there will always be exams every time to know if you were prepared and know everything you need to know to pass to the other rank. Now reaching a Grandmaster Rank would take a long time but it means something special because that shows you that you put all your effort and never stopped at being a Black Belt. To me my instructor Master Patrick West has meant much to me because without his help and guidance of reaching to the point of testing for Black Belt I would not take it and would still be a Cho Dan Bo. When I first met him he seemed a bit serious and strict which kind of scared me but really, he was a funny, happy, and strict master and that was fine with me because Tang Soo Do is a fun and serious training to show us how to defend ourselves from danger.…

After a year of training BJJ at my HIgh School my coach knew that I would be out of training over the summer so he offered me a scholarship to train at an official school called Bronx Jiu Jitsu, where he sometimes teaches. My first day there training I entered with the mindset of me beating everyone up, and completely one siding them, but I will never forget , that day when class started. Everything was way more intense than what we did in our high school. We drilled hard for over an hour practiced learned new complex techniques I would have never thought of.…
