Prior to enrolling in this course, I have not really taken any class that was strict about citing and referencing sources in APA format. I had no idea what APA format was or how to cite properly. However, the APA citations links that my professor provided were very useful and helped me be successful with the rest of my essays. The videos guided me step by step and were very simple to understand other different type of formats such as MLA, and Chicago. I’ve always considered myself a writer. It was the one hobby I could point to and say I both loved and was semi-decent at. However, taking an AP English course such as this one changed my idea of just what a “writer” is, all the while transforming how I read, interpret, and understand the written work of others. I never expected that I would one day be unable to read something without “arguing” with it in my head, or that that hot seat would change how I felt about and approached my writing. The three sample pieces I chose to include in my portfolio are an argumentative English essay, a book report written for an AP science class, and a lab report. These pieces illustrate my proficiency in multiple subject areas including research and argumentation. The first piece presented in my portfolio is an argumentative essay written for my AP Language and Composition course. The given essay, written by Edward O. Reflecting on your previous writing can bring to light how your writing skills have improved and grown into your current writing. Previously, I had been exposed to a lot of writing and reading in my AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature classes in high school. I found this practice a little bit challenging. I found it challenging because I’m not very good at analyzing passages for AP exams. I figured that out last year in AP Literature. When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university.
