Graduating from Providence College with a degree in Public and Community Service, I spent four years immersing myself in nonprofit organizations throughout the Providence, Rhode Island area as well as throughout the United States and Mexico. For five semesters, I served as a Community Liaison with the EXPLORE! program, a college access program for high school freshman and sophomores throughout Providence. As a Community Assistant for two semesters, I led a group of student volunteers to a local refugee family from Senegal home, where we worked with the family on English and becoming acclimated into their community. Additionally, as part of my responsibilities, I wrote a grant to supply resources for the family in order to assist in their acclamation of their community. My last semester of college, I was elected Chair of the Making A Difference Board at Providence in which the class distributed $10,000 to three organizations throughout Providence, Rhode Island. As Board Chair, I was responsible for the creation of the Request for Proposal as well as working with the Board to determine which organizations we wanted to fund. I spent two of my spring breaks building homes on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and in Tijuana, Mexico. While my undergraduate degree gave me a …show more content…

The mission of UHR is “ to provide care, hope, comfort and improved quality of life to individuals and their families facing serious illness.” While the initial thought of a hospice center is to assist individuals in their final days, UHR concentrates their efforts on the care of the patient in their final months and days, as well as assisting the families as they cope with the loss of their loved ones, no matter the length of time it takes them to

Having the opportunity to feel as though you’ve truly made a positive impact on the lives of others is undoubtedly a rewarding experience, and this was exactly what I was seeking when I signed up for an eight day community service trip to Puerto Rico. What I ended up receiving, however, was far more enriching, humbling, and life-altering than I had originally expected. Our main task was to make batches of cement for houses a day in the community of Villa del Rillo. Lots of Puerto Rican houses, mostly in the poorer areas, still haven’t recovered from the effects of Hurricane Hugo, which hit the island almost three decades ago. Difficult manual labor directly under the oppressive heat for hours every day left us sore, dirty, and tired, but gratified.…

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

Through my high school and college careers, I made community service a top priority. I completed many hours through my high school and extracurricular activities such as three years of participating in Wisconsin Day of Service, four years caroling at nursing homes for Project Merry Christmas, and four years helping plan and work the Spencer FFA Easter Egg Hunt. In college, I worked as a server for the annual benefit dinners, volunteered as an escort for guests during the week long convention held on campus, and headed up and created the first ever Freed-Hardeman University Change War with the proceeds going to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.…

When you get this letter 10 years will have passed since I was in your position. I never really considered that I had a racist bone in my body. I mean, most if not all of my friends then were minorities of some sort, and I got along just fine with them. But subconsciously I began to notice that the successes of minorities irritated me because part of me believed I was better than they were. So I began to try to find ways to justify my superiority so that I could avoid the reality that if I didn’t really start cracking down I would lose out to people of color.…

One of the best feelings in the world is giving back and educating the community. I’ve spent over 2,000 hours of community service helping schools and non-profits. Through this experience, I’ve become familiar with advocating for service projects and educating my peers on amazing opportunities. Through AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), I was a recruiter. As a recruiter, I had the opportunity to visit several high schools and colleges around the country advocating for the program, and all the good it does for the community.…

I once asked a close friend of mine, “How can a middle school student make a difference?” He simply answered, “ At our age, to make a difference we have to have a drive to make a change. You can’t just blindly run into world wanting to do something; you need a plan, determination, and confidence to know that you can make a difference.” I thought about what he said and realized he had a point. Kids my age are so concerned about the little things we never actually see the bigger picture; that there's something bigger than just dating, clothes and social media.…

As I became more involved on campus, I began to learn more about the institutional challenges that recent immigrants face. As Vice President of the Student Body, I created and chaired the Diversity Affairs Committee, which established a dialogue between international students at the fifth most diverse campus in the United States and their student government. This led to plans for a more thorough international student orientation; more diverse meal options that can accommodate dietary restrictions from various cultures; and (fingers crossed) plans for more affordable student…
