Reflective Essay In English Class

During my time here in English Comp 1 I have grown and I have learned a lot, way more than I have ever thought possible. I walked into this class with not the best mindset. I have never been a strong writer, nor ever had the passion or interest in writing. I have taken classes like this before and I didn’t seem to know exactly how to format an essay correctly. I have also never been interested in the topics in past classes. Writing a long descriptive essay is very hard once there is no interest in the topic. I have always been the one who has struggled with coming up with topics and being able to keep a readers interest. I seem to know what I want to say but when I write down the words my thoughts didn’t seem to flow. I have taken English classes in the past but none like this one. I was more into the topics we discussed in this class than ever before. Throughout the class, pop culture discussions have been …show more content…
I have noticed that in this essay as well as my argument essay. You cannot come up with a great paper written in less than an hour and I have struggled with that during this semester. With semester end and two kids and two jobs I have had a heavy plate. This essay was such a struggle for me to get written out. My topic of Facebook being addictive I could relate to very much because I to have a huge addiction to social media. But coming up with background support was very tuff seeing it is not a well-known diagnosable condition. Many doctors are coming forth realizing that this a huge epidemic and I only wish I gave myself more time in picking the topic. My time in this class has been rewarding and still a challenge that I will bring with me every day here on out. I am far from perfect in my writing and know that there is still tons for me to learn. But that is what is so great about this class. It has kept me on my toes and allowed me to go into many different paths when it came to my

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

On the first day of class, I felt pretty confident about my level of skills as a writer, but little did I know there were a lot of aspects in my writing that could be improved. As time progressed and we learned more about colloquial language and little things I could change in my essays to further advance and improve my writing. Now, I feel even more confident about my writing and know that all of these little changes I can make in my writing create a better flow of ideas and a higher level of formality. I feel that throughout this semester I have been greatly challenged as a writer and have advanced the most that I ever have in writing within such a short period of time. I have put in a lot time and effort into this class in order to create…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

For the cause and effect essay, I chose the topic I did because I knew a lot about it and could elaborate the topic well to create a 5-6 page essay. Through all of the essays I wrote this semester, I learned a lot of new writing techniques and strategies that will help me when I attend college next fall. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and…

The Final Test I passed the final test, but they didn’t. It all started with my class, called the “9ers”. We were the first class to ever have their whole grade graduate on the same day. We were the smartest of them all, is what the counselor told us. All we had to do was pass the final test to figure out who were leaving to go to the new community.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

Growing up with catholic education, I was primarily taught the importance of reading and writing. The generic hamburger 5-paragraph essay format was on our 10 commandments of writing and so was the idea of a minimum 6-8 sentences per paragraph. Entering high school English class, I found myself in a different situation than most typical high school students. My school offered International Baccalaureate English classes; these classes were structured differently than that of AP or Standard English. In this class, we were left to fend on our own.…

Improvement is a very positive factor in any line of work. It is seen when you adapt and overcome possible failures overtime, in order to benefit yourself. Prior to English 101, I have been taking several English classes, but each class helped me little by little to an English 101 student. Learning to have efficient studying habits such as study the day of the class and not doing things last minute. Also learning how to actually study other subjects and how to think critically. This has increased my learning habits. My student habits have changed dramatically,…

At the beginning of this English course, I was so nervous and scared that I would fail. I do not think I have ever been a good writer. It has always terrified me because I have difficulty putting my thoughts down on paper. This course has proven to be highly inspiring to me as well as frightening. It has really taught me more about the understanding of the writing process and structure, in which helped me to not focus so much on the actual writing parts.…

In my English class in the spring of 2015, I feel like I haven’t learned anything. I came into this class with a certain amount of information and have taken what I have learned and tried to expand on what I already know with the information that was given. This class has shown me that even though I feel like I haven’t learned much on the topic of English classes, I feel more confident with my ability to evaluate other students based on their writing skills and learned what to include with certain points and what to stray away from with certain topics. These have helped me learn what I need to include in essays to be a successful writer and what to include in future essays to become a better writer. Even though I had some disadvantages with…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
