Reflective Essay: All Quiet On The Wester

Decent Essays
I. Introduction
Writing and reading are important skills in college for creating essays, as well as in careers like medical and legal fields. When writing reports or essays, the information has to be organized, or it will become unfocused. Reading is just as important as writing since that is the main way the information will be conveyed. While I would not consider myself great at reading and writing, I do have experience with both of these skills. For some people, just getting started is the difficult part. I often have difficulty just starting to write trying to find the right words. However, after starting, the rest can be simple.

II. Previous Reading Experience
Everyone reads for their entire lives. It is just as unavoidable as breathing. I have read a couple of books such as Touching Spirit Bear, which is about a teenage convict who has to live among nature as part of his sentence. Another is All Quiet On The

College and Career Experience
Writing and reading skills are two of the most important skills needed in college and careers. I do not have any career experience in which career means getting paid, however as far as college is concerned, I have had writing assignments in each of my classes. There were three essays I had to write in Speech I, a narrative, an argumentive, and a demonstrative. These were difficult to write. I had to write every week which is something I am not used to. The essay I enjoyed the most was the argumentive essay because I enjoy refutation.

V. Conclusion
Reading and writing skills are a fundamental tool in life. However, that does not mean that reading and writing are the only tools needed in life. Interpreting what is being read can make a difference if it is done properly. It can save a writer from not understanding what is really being stated. I do not have much experience with these skills for paid careers, but for school, I hope that my skills improve as time goes and as I read and write more throughout my college

Argumentative Essay Ben Franklin once wrote, “Well done is better than well said.” In simpler terms, Franklin is stating that actions are better than words. While actions and words are both elements that can be manipulated to fit a given situation, one is usually more efficient in solving problems, defining character, and accomplishing goals. In the novels Unbroken and Maus, the actions of the characters prove to be the most vital asset in their survival by helping them overcome obstacles and giving their lives meaning and purpose. On the other hand, The Scarlet Letter illustrates that being unable to transform words into actions makes one emotionally and mentally weaker.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

My English professor made me write a minimum of five pages for an essay and I never wrote over three pages since high school. This course was a challenge for me, but it also taught me the value to writing. The more papers I wrote in college made my views change on writing. Writing became a secondary voice for me, it wasn’t difficult for me to write about what I knew or either what was near and dear to my heart. Although I respect writing, it is still something that I still struggle with till this day.…

During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

Writing and reading was taught briefly to me in my 5th grade year. For reading, I was taught to read an essay and if I don’t understand it then I reread it. Sometimes I take notes but when I do, I have a hard time picking out the main ideas and then rewriting the notes. When I’m writing an essay, I have a hard time keeping it clear for the reader to read. Strong vocabulary is also hard for me to include in my essays.…

When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…
