Amid the chaos of life, self-reflection rarely occurs. Many of us walk through life, never stopping to consider our current location on the path towards our goal destinations. In the modern world, our minds have become restless. Rather than taking the time to consider our current place, we scramble toward our hopes and dreams, all the while running away from our past. With our minds constantly consumed by the the next to-do list, we lose our connection to ourselves, forgetting along the way to enjoy our lives. With the world so chaotic, sometimes we need to take a break from the commotion and slow down. We need to observe the world, and by doing so connect once again with our minds, and with the world around us. It is my utmost hope that this journal, and more importantly this trip will help me reconnect with myself and the world in ways I could never before imagine.

However, wherever I look, I see a lupine and am reminded, no matter the challenge, we will persist even in the rockiest of climates. In the words of Barbra Cooney's Miss Rumphius,"You must do something to make the world more beautiful. While I can't be Miss Rumphius (a childhood dream of mine), I can certainly aspire to be like her. Alice Rumphius desired to do three things in her life: live by the sea, go to faraway places, and make the world a more beautiful place. While I live by the ocean, Iceland and this trip is the stepping stone to becoming the lupine lady of my five year old

Michael McMillan once said ”, You can not start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one.” It is because I agree that we tend to continue to look back at the past instead of focusing on the present. I agree with Mr. McMillan. Mr. Mcmillan shows that we will never be able to contain or control our lives if we refuse to move on. In the book This Is Just My Face by Gabourey Sidibe, Mrs. Sidibe shows that no matter how hard we would like to erase the past.…

I spent six of my summers growing up at an all girls camp called Wavus. Wavus is a wilderness tripping camp in Maine based out of my hometown, Jefferson. Living in Jefferson, I did not obtain a great deal of exposure to other people from the country, let alone other parts of the world. When I went to Wavus I was put in a cabin with girls from all over the United States and even one from Belgium. Having to live with these girls for a month each summer enabled me to become close friends with them and learn about their lives.…

The fact that we are extraordinarily different makes us unique. Embracing what makes us dissimilar while others tend to feel uncomfortable becomes an advantage in today's society. “You Can Go Home Again: A Sequence” by Mary TallMountain, and “Waiting at the Edge: Words toward a Life” by Maurice Kenny both focus on a search for identity. Both individuals discover a sense of identity despite the harsh experiences at school, because of the influence of their fathers, and due to their profound love for writing.…

Mission's Trip The third week of June, 2015, marks the week my perspective on life changed. This trip contributed to the obliteration of my egotistical state of mind. I went on a prayer tour, spent time at an elderly apartment complex, helped at a community outreach, served at a food bank, and visited a children's learning center. Each of these experiences affected me differently, but were similar in that they all changed my outlook on life.…

My previous camping trips I have taken in the past years have been memorable and full of hardship. I consider myself a very outgoing and adventurous person, that is why I go on crazy trips. Canoeing is my preferred way of traveling when touring lakes and rivers such as the Boundary waters and the Flambeau river. Major disadvantage of canoes is that they weigh up to 85 pounds. The weight matters being when crossing land to get to the next lake the canoe goes on your shoulders to carry it.…

A VOLCANO TRAGEDY January 15 , 2004 was the tragic day that a volcano had erupted. It all happened so fast like in a blink of an eye everything was so dark and magma was gushing out like a gusher candy. We realized that we where in the ring of fire , after the tragedy had passed. Before all that happened me and my family decided to head for safety in a gym where thousands of people were panicking trying to find out what was going on. All I could get from the gym was water, food, a fire blanket , and a flashlight , but in my head all I can think about is how are we going to survive?…

Soft whooshing sounds rose up from beneath my skis as they slid across the soft crystal like snow glistening in the bright winter sun. The cool and crisp air was the ideal temperature for a day of skiing, not too cold to make it uncomfortable, but still cold enough to keep the snow from melting and turning slushy. With these snow conditions and bright blue skies above, all in all, it looked to be a perfect day for skiing with my family. Accompanied by my Mom, Uncle, and 4 cousins, we woke at the crack of dawn, packed the car with equipment and snacks, and began the hour and a half trek to Mount Sunapee in New Hampshire. At best, my level of skiing competence could be described as advanced-beginner.…
