Narrative Essay About Reading Class

Do you remember in elementary when we had to read every night for homework? The think with me growing up was that I could read the book but sometimes I couldn’t comprehend what the book was talking about. I had a hard time comprehending things I read through elementary and middle school. From me having to go through this it did become frustrating growing up. When I was in six and seventh grade I was put in this reading class I was required to take. My teacher name was Ms. Pickett and she was my reading teacher for six and seventh grade. She was a very nice lady who tried to help students like me who had trouble reading. I felt like the class helped me a little bit but one of the things I didn’t like about the class was it sometimes made me feel like I wasn’t smart. I remember when I was pick to read in front of the class, I hated it because I would be reading slow and I could see the faces of how the other students were looking. Sometimes I would hear laughter in the back of the class going on. I just wanted to stop reading and sit down immediately. In the class we would also do this thing called rotation and we would have three stations to go to. The three stations were silent reading, do reading stuff on the computer, and work with the teacher. The whole class would be put in groups and go to each station for a certain amount of time. Even though the class helped me with my reading it didn’t helped me enough because in my first year of high school I was put in a reading class and I still haven’t passed the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment test). You have to pass the FCAT to get out the reading classes and by eleven grade you must pass it. If you don’t pass by your senior year you cannot get your diploma. Even though I was put in the reading class in ninth grade I wasn’t giving up. …show more content…
By this time I wasn’t reading as slow as I was in six and seventh grade. When I was put in this class, I had a teacher names Mrs. White. When I told reading tests in her class I would pass some of them and some of them I didn’t. Even though I did pass her class at the end of the year, I still did not pass the FCAT. Since I didn’t pass the FCAT I was put into a reading class for my sophomore year. At this point I was getting tired of the FCAT and I had to pass it the next …show more content…
Brown. I can say this teacher helped me out with my reading. She continued to work with me and other students. She would make us read out loud in front of the class and we would go over reading test to help us get a better understanding. She also gave us different strategies on how to pass the FCAT. We were still doing rotations and working together in groups. We picked out books that we were interested in reading in and would read them for a certain amount of time in class. When I took the FCAT this year I was confident and I believe in myself that I can do it. I still didn’t pass but I went up more points than I ever did in the past. I was proud of myself but still upset that I still could not pass the

In the essay, “ The Lonely Good Company of Books,” by Richard Rodriguez,he mentioned to his readers in the very beginning that he was not big reader as a child. Rodriguez writes,” I knew my mother and father could read and write in both, Spanish and English(293).” He also mentions,” their reading consisted of work manuals, prayer books, newspapers, and recipes(Rodriguez 293).” From what Rodriguez writes we can gather that reading was not used very much in his house hold. When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…

Needless to say I was sweating bullets and deeply concerned about not being able to succeed.…

As a young child at school, we had the Accelerated Reading Program. It was a program that encouraged children to read various books, and then after to take a quiz based on the books. This program really helped me, because the program pushed me to read more. Since I am bilingual, learning two languages as a child was a bit challenging for me, and learning how to read was even harder. I would sometimes mix up letters, vowels, and sometimes talk in Russian when I was supposed to talk in English.…

In-class reading response After reading aloud my personal essay for the fifth time, I felt I was well prepared for the next in class reading. I made a final check for any unmarked grammatical errors that I should avoid during my reading. During class, my classmates—who had an in-class reading— had a distinctive tone that reflected their emotions. Some had a casual and laid-back tone that invited the reader to relax and enjoy hearing their personal memoir or essay read out loud.…

In sixth grade, my literature teacher was very assertive and arrogant. This alone gave me a bad impression of the class which spread into my reading education. It was also the first experience I had of keeping a log of my reading, which has been the bane of my existance since I was first introduced to it. Additionally, the teacher recommended to me a number of books that I hated. All of these problems compounded to decrease my reading time.…

The English Student It was a Tuesday morning during the third period when I met my Sophomore English teacher, Mrs. Carol Hughes. I started judging her thinking that she didn’t know how to teach since she taught at a high school considered ghetto. During class, I was usually disruptive and Mrs. Hughes had so much patience that she wouldn’t say a word. She kept calling me to answer questions about pronouns, adjectives, and nouns. I remember leaning back on my chair as if I was the instructor dictating the class.…
