The access to past criminal history of patients being treated in correctional facilities is said to be primarily responsible for the poor treatment they tend to receive when seeking medical attention as inmates. The Effects of Correctional Education and Recidivism “Education Reduces Crime, Three-State Recidivism Study” As the costs of incarcerating offenders progressively increases and overtaxes the prison system and taxpayers as well, it is time to reconsider correctional education as an alternative method in dealing with prisoner recidivism. Today the solution to an overcrowded prison system is to build more correctional facilities, although that resolution does not address the primary problem of recidivism. In the past, there has never been any study done extensively, which describes the impact of correctional education provided to offenders. First and foremost African-Americans and Hispanics are differentially involved in crimes and they tend to commit more crimes. Their criminality is tied to the fact that these groups more often suffer from poverty and unemployment. Analysis of the Juvenile Justice System and Dipartites amongst Minorities The United States incarcerates more youths than any other development country; approximately 2 million juveniles are arrested annually in the United States (Barnet et al. 2014). Although juveniles are protected against cruel and unusual punishment by the Eighth Amendment, many states in the U.S. are creating and implementing new laws designed to be more stringent with the juveniles. These new laws range anywhere from setting curfews to trying a minor as an adult. Studies show that not only has there has also been an increase in the number of minority juveniles being arrested, but minority youths are more likely to receive harsher punishments as well (Mears, Pickett, & Mancini, 2015).
