To complete the simulation, I decided to go home. This was to avoid the need to travel as well as to be in an environment where no one was informed about the assignment. As I drove home, I created my story of how I would explain my new condition to my parent. Considering I had work during the first half of the day, my story became, “I lifted a heavy box of files at work from a high shelf without positioning my body correctly. As I tried to take the box down from the shelf, I lost control which resulted in my injury.” All questions relating to driving were answered with the false statement of, “I drove slowly using one hand.”
Whereas I was ready with a plausible story, I was not ready for the process of donning a sling. It dawned on me when I was donning the sling to officially start my 24 hours, that throughout my life I had never been physically disabled due to a broken bone. This was an entirely new experience for me which made donning the sling correctly a challenge on its own. In addition to trying to figure out how to wear the sling, I had the difficult task of

One of the first lessons was the change in people’s attitude towards the disabled person. With my very plausible background story of how I was injured, my family was even more caring towards me. Naturally, my parents wanted to take me to the emergency room but after some convincing, they both thought it would be best if I went to bed earlier instead of working on homework. My mother and brother also opted to wash my dishes for me. While my parents’ reaction felt normal, my sibling’s overly helpful actions towards me were unexpectedly surprising.
