I have recently had a meeting with the Emotional Wellbeing Team and I am looking forward to working with them to help a young man to overcome his depression and return to education.

Experience My experience working with the Behaviour Intervention Team at William Howard School for four years helped me understand the issues and barriers that children with emotional social and behavioural difficulties face. Since working with Barnardos targeted support team I have been able to develop those skill further and involve the family as a whole for the benefit for all.
I acknowledge that working with hard to reach and vulnerable people has a toll on the worker which is why I feel that regular supervision is vital and recently my training in Mindfulness has equipped me with the skills I need to remain focussed and healthy.

I’ve had the pleasure of working in partnership with Yolanda Young for the past eight years in my capacity as a national child welfare trainer and consultant. During that time, I have had the opportunity to witness her competence, confidence, focus and optimism in developing a highly functioning and adept team. Yolanda has demonstrated a sincere commitment to providing the best service to children and families. She takes leadership to the next level by inspiring, guiding and developing her team to provide the best to children and families as well. More specifically, when she has noticed an area in which her team was not utilizing best practice principles to achieve better outcomes for children and families; she would design incentives,…

The principles of trauma-informed care (TIC) can be universally applied to other practice models, such as the family preservation model. Using a strengths-based perspective is a valuable TIC principle that would be very effective in family preservation. By highlighting a family’s strengths you can use these attributes to address challenges. Noticing strengths can also help build engagement and rapport with clients to help aid in the intervention process. Being person-centered is another TIC principle that could guide family preservation practice (D. Strohm, PowerPoint, September 10th, 2015).…

There is an emphasis on person-centred work and building positive relationships with clients rather than attending to their needs in a “robotic manner to check off a box and get rid of them as soon as possible,” (Service team leader Wesley Mission interview, August 2017). The client-centred approach by the carers of Wesley Mission is built around the principle of social justice, and giving disempowered people a fair treatment. This is built on the foundation of social justice. The core of community work is the ethos of social…

Integrating into the agency has been both a positive and at times a bit overwhelming. On both a professional and personal level it has made me more aware and conscious of my personal feelings and how this impacts on practice. Being aware of my own biases and prejudices will allow me to self-reflect to be able to make improved professional ethical decisions. Being familiar with Barnardos policies which includes safety when attending house visits by documenting where we are going in our work calendar and always letting reception know where we are, client confidentiality and exchange of information has made my learning experience at Barnardos beneficial for future practice. Supervision occurs with two supervisors, with every second week supervision…

Stop and think. How would you feel if there was no one to support you when your life is suddenly in turmoil, where your dignity as well as independence has been taken away from you, where you’re struggling completing the tasks that you used to complete without a second thought? As someone who has battled with mental health, fortunately, I have been given the support needed to aid my recovery from my family, friends and dedicated health and social care professionals. I learnt the importance of self-care and routine and expressing myself through the activities I enjoy, including my love for reading, as like me, many individuals find it extremely difficult to talk about our thoughts and feelings and require a different outlet.…

From an early age I have been intrigued by the human mind and how it works. This interest has been enhanced through my study of psychology. Although I have only studied this subject for a relatively short period of time, I have enjoyed the variety the A-level course provides and I feel I have had a sample of different fields of this subject. I have particularly enjoyed studying comparative psychology because I am interested in how the human mind can be explained in evolutionary terms and how we can be compared to non-human animals. I have always enjoyed mathematics, both learning and application.…

I learned early in the program that it takes patience and perseverance to stay in this program. I will reflect on the courses that has opened my eyes to the diversity in this society. The Intro to Social Work course was wonderful at displaying how the social work foundation got started and the people who stumbled upon social work through the act of kindness by looking beyond themselves to help others.…

The intervention plan will be created using an eco-systematic approach, which primarily focuses on the three levels that impact Cheryl’s life: micro, meso and macro (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). My role as a social worker in the child protection agency is to prioritise the safety of Jasmine and Kylie, but in order to do so, changes need to be made in their environment which involves their mother Cheryl, which is ultimately why this approach was chosen (Stanley, 2015). To be aware of ‘where the client is at’ and to be engaged during this ongoing process on intervention, I have utilised a strength based focus during this intervention process noting down her strengths as well as concerns for goal planning (Healy, 2014). As a social worker for a child…
