The role of Nurse Practitioner (NP) is among the four recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse roles. NPs are independent practitioners with prescriptive privileges, and are found in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, family and specialty practices, as well as in nursing homes. Additionally, and importantly, in these times of corporate driven medicine, NP’s can bill and be reimbursed for services rendered (McClelland, 2014). The four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm; health, person, environment, and nursing practice, overlap and combine to form the foundation for nursing knowledge, theory and practice at all levels including the advanced clinical practice level (Bender & Feldman, 2015).…

Family Nurse Practitioner vs. Nurse Administrator There are many various roles within healthcare that one can choose as a career path. Many choose a route that directly impacts patient care via treatment care plans while others choose to collaborate with other disciplines through an indirect patient care profession that impacts and improves the patient’s overall care experience. Regardless of the route, the goals in healthcare are the same, to provide safety and the highest level of patient-centered quality care (American Organization of Nurse Executives [AONE], 2015, p. 3). Direct and indirect care roles are both beneficial and provide services to patients but do so in differing manners.…

According to Forchuk and Dorsay (1995) Peplau’s theory “tended to focus on the one-to-one, therapeutic nurse-client relationship” (p. 110), and the theory cannot easily be transferred to a family unit. While Peplau’s theory is very useful when dealing with psychiatric patients, it is not very generalized, and the self-care model is easier to apply to a greater range of patients. Peplau also believes that a patient should be able to interact with the nurse in order to have a successful relationship, limiting the generalizability even more to patients who were stable and responsive. Orem spent time working to develop a more standardized nursing curriculum, therefore Orem’s “work influenced nursing sciences, nursing practice, and nursing education” (Taylor, 2011,…

Secondly, patients will receive further care by having an on-call case manager on standby if needed.…

Breast cancer is a condition that does not discriminate and therefore runs across all cultural walls. However, the effects of a breast cancer diagnosis among different group have different end-results. For example, the American Cancer Society (ACS[2014]) concluded that despite the higher incidence of breast cancer mortality among Caucasian women, the mortality rate in the black community remains higher than that of their counterparts. Breast cancer is a condition that can be treated if detected earlier, and therefore Nurse Practitioners (NPs) have a responsibility to contribute to early screening especially that of African-Americans to help decrease the disparity in the 5 year survival rate. There is no further need to prove that there is such…

American social psychologist, Stanley Milgram once stated, “It may be that we are puppets — puppets controlled by the strings of society. But at least we are puppets with perception, with awareness. And perhaps our awareness is the first step to our liberation.” This quotation firmly explains the mission of my future work as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Although, at the end of my lifetime, society may not fully free ourselves from the constricting views of humanity; we might at least open each others eyes to the fact that we are under a massive veil of perception.…
