However if you’re not a person that adapt to change this may be hard to cope with. Always keep in mind, that everyone have different coping mechanisms. What my work for someone may or may not work for you. My subjection is to idenifiy your problem and come up with your own ways to cope with.
Our lifespan development start from the day we are conceived to the day we leave this earth. The developmental stages play an important role in our lives as were developed the stages start with birth, infancy, adolescence, adulthood, old age and finally death. We are constantly growing and changing and developing increasing in physical size and the progression of skills and the capacity to function (Polan & Taylor, 2011). Along the way we learn how to communicate, use adaptive and maladaptive defense mechanism. In life we also learn how to identify stressors as well as coping with them. We learn the ways to survive throughout life. For instances if we are not properly nurtured as an infant we may have difficulty trusting in relationships as an adult. “Trust is the foundation of healthy personality” (Polan & Taylor, 2011, p.61). I will need to identify the grieving process and know that a person can regress to any of these stages of development. With the understanding of growth and development it allows me to engage in a therapeutic relationship with the individual who has this terminal illness and to approach the difficult behaviors, rather than reacting to it (Czuchta Romano, Donna M.). Therapeutic communication allows the patient feel comfortable during the hospital stay. It allows the nurse to show empathy instead of sympathy. Empathy is putting yourself in that person’s shoes but letting their life problems get in the way of the care that you as the nurse is providing. On the hand having sympathy is acknowledging another person hardship and providing comfort and assurance at the same time not being able to set aside your own feeling.
