Theological Reflection on Justice in South Korea Context

Justice has been one of significant topics in world Christianity in recent decades. Liberation theology has been developed in the various contexts emphasizing the liberation of the oppressed and concerning justice. It disproves the fact that this world we live in is not just. However, God is just. He does not treat people with favoritism. The scripture says that “the Rock, his work is perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God, without deceit, just and upright is he.” God is omnipotent. God knows all past, present and future, even every moment what we think. His judgment is fair because he knows everything. God is holy, morally detached from the rebellious and corrupted,

Throughout the Bible, God is the defender and protector of the poor, the aliens, the debtors, the widows and the orphans.

Justice is applied not only to personal behaviors or an individual’s right or just claim but also to the governmental responsibilities of kings and rulers. Now Korea is full of people who demonstrate candlelight vigils against the president because of serious reason. In this situation, what should Christians or churches proclaim justice? How will they realize that justice in the world? In early November of this year, seminary students of Korea from various denominations participated in the protest rally with the hope to eliminate the injustice and inequality in Korean society and to establish the justice of God in Korea. They had a prayer time and shared the sacrament surrounded by police on the street in Seoul. Some of them were caught by police officers while marching in candlelight when they shouted "President Park Geun-hye retires" and "God 's justice is beyond the law." What is the role of the churches and believers in the realization of justice? How does a pastoral caregiver present justice of God to those who lose or give up their hope raging on the authority of the country? As a pastoral counselor, what are the challenges of justice before the crisis of the nation? First, it is necessary to examine whether there is wrong mindset of justice in us. There is a proverb that stands for one - sided justice; “one law for the rich and another for the poor.” The biased justice is not already justice. Justice must be fair and applicable to everyone without discrimination. If our definition of justice is wrong, it would be wrong when we apply justice in our lives. Thus, we need a measuring stick. The most important standard given to us is the Word of God. In light of the Word, we must follow the direction that the Word directs and what the Word suggests. Second, Justice is also about restoring broken relationships with God, other people, rulers, and social structures. It is important to resent and fight against an unjust society, but it is necessary to realize justice from me or us. We must seek to achieve justice by trusting in all the restoration of the end of the time in all the relationships with home, school, neighborhood, workplace, community, and country. As God sends His Son Jesus to the world of violence and oppression, we need to experience and see the true justice and true emancipation
