When I sit back and think about this dilemma using the consequentialist theory, I feel I’m doing the right thing. As the utilitarianism theory states that you should maximize the benefits to society while minimizing the harms. The stakeholders of this situation are society, the company I work for, and myself. I guess you could consider the industry as a whole as a stakeholder. I have been in the industry for 13 years now and have never sold anything to anyone that they truly don’t need. I believe that by doing this I’m maximizing the gain for society, while it may be hurting myself, the company and the industry. When I made a consequentialist analysis chart the benefits for myself and the company would cause more harm to the overall effect on society. It is expensive to have a vehicle repaired already but if your costing people even more money on unneeded items, it will affect other businesses where they could spend that money. I think the best possible solution to this dilemma would be to pay the technicians to perform the inspection. This would make them be more ethical since they are making money not relying on up-sales.
