The specials offered at Carlos Pacheco Elementary are art, health, music, and physical education. A majority of the specialists travel from classroom, to classroom, however, students are led by their classroom teacher to the gymnasium for physical education. Ms. Olejarz is the physical education teacher at Carlos Pacheco Elementary. As soon as the students entered the gymnasium, Ms. Olejarz took attendance. Students seemed very eager to get up and start moving. Before students were able to do this, Ms. Olejarz reviewed why it’s important to walk every day and students responded with the importance of exercising and the affect exercise has on your heart. She instructed students that they would be walking in order for everyone to exercise and participate, including those students with improper footwear. Richard, I received permission to record our discussion during our interview. After asking Ms. Richard in what ways may music and song be integrated into content area curriculum, she responded with the following: “I think music is great for teaching memorization. For instance, when you teach the alphabet, kids learn the alphabet song because the melody helps them to record it in their brain. It’s also good for teaching math songs and history songs. For older grades, it’s good to connect historical events with music, also, in the morning, it’s a great way to get students thinking about their day or about a certain theme you’re going to concentrate on for the day, such as respect.
