Over the course of the class so far we have given two speeches. So far, I am getting more comfortable giving speeches with every speech I give. The more speeches I give I am sure the trend of getting more comfortable will continue. The speech that I am going to be discussing in this essay is my praise speech. I will discuss my opinions on my vocal qualities and my nonverbal communication, as well as, any other things that I would like to improve about my speeches.
The first thing about my praise speech that I want to talk about in this essay is my vocal qualities. So, I could give my speech in front of the mirror and practice my eye contact and gestures. I think that this would give me more confidence when I was up at the podium giving my speech. The book gives some good tips like, go through your preparation outline aloud, have a speaking outline, practice the speech, refine the delivery of the speech, and give a practice speech with conditions as close as possible to the ones you will be in (Lucas, 258-259). In an article called 3 Keys to Public Speaking, he states there are 3 P’s to Success, which are Prepare, Practice, and Personalize (Ricci, 1). For the Prepare pillar, some of the things that it says are, how long will you have to speak, who is the audience, how big is the crowd going to be, and other things of that nature (Ricci, 1). For Practice, he states that it is important to practice aloud so you can get comfortable to the sound of your own voice (Ricci, 2). Finally, for the Personalize section, Ricci states that what he means by personalize is to be natural, to be yourself, and to not try to be something that you are not (Ricci, 2). I think these tools are all very helpful to look at and are simple enough so that I can remember them when I am preparing for my next
