Reflection Of My Clinical Experience

Within the first two weeks of clinical, I believe there were a few aspects of my practice that were successful. One of these aspects involved my ability to properly irrigate a nasogastric tube. I see this as a strength because when asked to complete this task by my co-caring nurse, I informed her that I have never done this before, in which she responded by guiding me through the process and answering any questions I had. From this, I was able to correctly irrigate the patient’s tube as well as learn a new skill. Another aspect I believe to have showcased my success as a student nurse occurred when my co-caring nurse showed me how to reset a Sigma Spectrum IV Pump. As I have never used this type of pump before, I was walked through the process of setting the flow rate of a primary line. This process allowed me to gain important knowledge and skills needed during my future practice, thus leading me to the belief that this learning opportunity highlights a successful part of my practice. …show more content…
One of these aspects is my willingness to take initiative. As I am someone who does not like doing anything unless I am comfortable with the task at hand, it is crucial that if I am to be a successful student nurse, I must go outside my comfort zone and seize every opportunity given to me. Although it may take a few weeks to build my comfort level, I can improve upon this aspect by reminding myself that although I am a novice student nurse, I can and must learn how to properly carry out specific nursing duties, not matter how hesitant I may be because I will need to know how to complete these duties in the future. I believe that if I constantly remind myself of this, I will become more comfortable with going outside my comfort zone and thus increasing my success in

My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…

One area that I believe I was successful in was in regards to competency 3.3, 3.8 and 3.12. While caring for a client who had been experiencing chest pain prior to me coming on shift, I ensured that I spoke with my nurse about the changes to expect and how to respond if the changes should arise during my care. I also made sure to take frequent vital signs and use subjective questioning to determine any changes in the status of my client. This allowed me to skillfully implement appropriate nursing care and prepare myself for a situation that could potentially change rather quickly. One area that I have been working on and would like to improve upon is developing mini DM assignments with each client that I take into my care.…

November 12, 2015, 8 am third day of clinical, I was assigned to shadow an RN named Senaite who was working at the 300 hall, where most of the client are not bed ridden but there are some who are not mobile. I was asked to check blood pressure of a client. I introduced myself, washed my hands, checked the client’s name, and explained the process. I asked the client which hand he prefers, the client replied “it does not matter for me,” then I checked the blood pressure, but it was too low or abnormally low for someone like him mentally active and alert. While I was checking his blood pressure, he was listening to the radio on his headphone, and flipping between TV stations, which confirmed to me that he was able to express any pain or abnormality.…

Today it felt extremely strange not coming into the clinic until 12pm. Once at work, I helped with filling meds while everyone was taking their lunch breaks. It was a pretty slow day and everything was pretty much caught up, so I went to our pharmacy and started helping take inventory and cleaning the shelves off. This was extremely helpful for me because it was helping me know where each drug was and Mary was quizzing me and asking me what each drug does while we were moving them around. After the cleaning was done I completed a few urinalysis and fecal tests.…

Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation. My clinical rotation as a student nurse did not only imply observing the providers, but also meant active participation on my part. Being engaged, enabled me to put into practice what I have learned in theory. The first day of my rotation, the nurse permitted me to augment the Pitocin dose by two units after 20 minutes. I thought that was exciting because I learned about the medication in the class and participated in administering it.…

This was my first day of clinical and I was pretty scared. However, I'm glad that I got chosen to be in the X-Ray department. Compared to other peers in our class, I would say I got the best experience. I got to shadow a student named Shannon who was also shadowing X-ray Technicians as well. She is now in a 2-year program where she does clinical rotations at Peconic, Brentwood, and Manningville Hospitals from 8-4 through Mon-Fri and all summer.…

In the event of experiencing pain in my right eye, it was imperative for me to leave work for my health as well as for the people around me. In the meantime, once I was relieved by the attendance of another employee, my daughter drove me to the emergency room. At the hospital, the doctor stood approximately 3 feet away from me, while shining a light into my eyes, in turn, she stated I had “the pink eye”. Meanwhile, I was given a prescription for an eye drop, when the eyed drop was applied, it caused my eye to sting, as the pain penetrated to the back of my head. In brief, I visit an eye doctor who was sincere, patient, and caring.…

Flint, Michigan was a town once filled with a working Middle class and a booming economy but now has a high poverty level and an economy that is close to nonexistent, leaving the town to switch water sources to the local river because it reduced cost. When we were asked to research, and hold a class discussion on the situation going on I was excited to hear fellow classmate’s opinions because I was aware of was going on. Although, I knew about the situation in Flint and could infer that this would have some major effects on the people in the town researching more opened my eyes to many community problems that affect the population's health tremendously. Switching the water supply to reduce costs exposed the residents to high levels of lead…

One of my strengths this semester was administering medication. Every medication that I gave I did the three checks and the six rights of medication administration. One time I grabbed the wrong eye drops from the drawer before checking the MAR but when I started the three checks I noticed right away that I had the wrong medication. This showed me the importance of doing the three checks before every medication administration since it is easy to make a mistake. Another strength of mine this semester was being compassionate and empathetic to my patients.…
