Reflective Essay On Pursuing A Career In The Medical Field

I began this course during a time of uncertainty and curiosity. I was not confident in my own abilities, but was still excited to explore my interests in a low pressure environment. I still thought that pharmacy school could be an option, but was unsure of my ability to meet the prerequisites. Today I am still unsure about what career path I will pursue, but I have learned more about myself and a few things I would like my journey to involve. It’s as if I am tasked with purchasing a vehicle. I didn’t previously think I could afford to pay for the fancy high maintenance pharmacy school car, but realized if I save up I could swing it. I am still unsure as to what vehicle to buy, but know of some necessary features now. I am not worried about the purchase, because I know that I still have time to decide. For the last ten years I have been pretty dead set on going into a career in the medical field. …show more content…
I realized that my sense of adventure is a key value I hold. I learned that while helping others makes me happy, there were other ways I could accomplish this and still feed my spirit of adventure. The strong interest inventory gave me a launching point to explore careers outside of the medical field that caught my interest. I followed the advice of SII results and began exploring more hands on careers as well. This led me to work for a brief time on campus repairing vacuum pumps for all of the laboratories. It was rewarding work, but ultimately my health got in the way and was terminated. This short experience spurred by and combined with test results taught me that I enjoy being able to solve problems and see concrete results. These are features I plan to incorporate into my career. The MBTI revealed some new truths to me as well. While I already knew my type, I learned that I prefer to trust people to work on their own.
