I got the chance to learn how to tell about a discourse community and what discourse community a writer belongs to through the objective “Campus Social Group”. I also had to identify a discourse community in my paper. I wrote my paper about the Western Illinois Swim Team. I broke my paper down into many groups with subdivisions in order to fully explain in detail the team and their similarities and differences. By writing this paper for an audience who had absolutely no idea about the topic, it allowed me to get deep into my explanation and include more details. I learned that the discourse community is extremely important in a person's paper, and that it helps to shape how the writer will present the information to their audiences. Before taking English 180 I had heard of ethos, pathos, and logos, but I did not know much about them. This semester I learned about rhetorical situations and appeals (Artifact 3). Through the objective “Goal Progress”, I analyzed steps taken and obstacles that were encountered and overcame. I focused on a the intellectual aspect of my life. Now that I have gained knowledge on the subject, I am able to use and notice when a writer is using emotion, logic, or ethics to grab the attention of their

Often in this paper I will be referring to a discourse community, and at first it would seem like you are not a part of one. Nevertheless, sports teams, book clubs, even just having a job puts you in a discourse community. John Swales, a professor of linguistics, defines discourse communities as having certain criteria. He states that they have an agreed set of public goals, they have mechanisms of intercommunication, and they have a specific lexis. I am currently in my second year here at Western Illinois, and I am majoring in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration.…

During the first few weeks of ENG 1301, we’ve learned the significance of learning rhetorical skills while writing; specifically, the rhetorical triangle - also known as ethos, pathos, and logos appeals. Whether you need to beg your parents for more gas money, or you want to receive a raise from that revolting fast food chain you’re forced to work at to pay college tuition, these appeals are the foundation of persuasion and can move an audience in any which way the author pleases to do so. In order to be accepted into a community, one must deeply understand the overall purpose and interests of the group. Once this happens, you’ll be able to intuitively understand the discourse community’s way of communicating and interacting with one another.…

The writings I’ve worked on for the Research Problem have helped me towards achieving course learning outcome number 2: "Produce an extended writing project that uses research methods and research genres to explore a topic applicable to the course and that draws substantively on concepts from primary and/or secondary sources." From Beaufort, I learned that limiting your writing to one discourse community produces writers who are ill-prepared, highly demotivated and incompetent “products” (Beaufort 7). Hence, I had to learn subject matter knowledge, genre knowledge, rhetorical knowledge and the writing process knowledge concerning my professional field. By acquiring this knowledge, I was able to begin my becoming as a competent writer. From Johns and Swales, I learned what the term “discourse community” means.…

For the last few weeks our class has been discussing what it means to be a discourse community as well as what it means to be a part of one. I am writing this paper to impart upon the fellow students in our class, as well our professor that I not only understand the meaning on a discourse community but that I also have been a full-fledged member of one myself. To further verify the extent of my membership I also am able to show the ethos, logos, and pathos that I encountered while within my discourse community over the past year. The discourse community in which I was a part of was show choir, the varsity choir at my high school. It was my junior year in high school when I decided that I wanted to join and at the time I did not know how to join and decided that I should I ask director how to do so.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…
