For the past few weeks, I have learned about the concept of critical thinking. Learning about what it is to be a critical thinker has led me to a path of self-actualization, for it has allowed me to embrace what I do not know and to strive for the understanding of the unknown. The course on critical thinking has allowed me to analyze what I stand for and to recognize, strengthen, and even change my views by taking all sides of an argument into consideration to reach a conclusion.

There have been times where I cannot make a decision on what I stand for, meaning I am neither for or against, and I wonder if this is even considered critical thinking. I have also become aware of my biases, and I too, as Dr. David Laude mentioned on his behalf, have come to detest them. Through this process I have become aware of my family’s biases and I have been challenged with ways in which to approach them. While the critical thinker that has emerged in me has allowed to understand why they feel the way they do, at times it can be difficult to reach a middle ground. This is especially true with my aunt and her stance on abortion. While I believe women should have the right to choose whether or not they want an abortion regardless of whether it is because the baby has chromosomal disorder, financial need, because they were a rape victim, or even because they do not have the care to raise a baby. I believe that inflicting upon women to have a child they do not want can result in a terrible outcome for the baby, whether that is because of an unloving home or the foster care system. She, on the other hand, does not believe that women should have abortions simply because they do not want to raise a baby. Because she is not able to have a baby herself, I think, she is biased towards this
