Nutrition Education Program

The nutrition education program that I participated in was the F.U.N. Center for the Washington Union High School (WUHS) students. The F.U.N. Center stands for families understanding nutrition, and was a pre-existing program that my group continued this semester. Our mission for this program was, “to provide an encouraging atmosphere for Washington Union High School students and their families to learn the skills and nutrition knowledge necessary for a healthy lifestyle.” After administering the needs assessment we discovered that the WUHS students lacked knowledge of nutrient dense foods, were not consuming adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables, snacked mostly on junk food, and were interested in learning about nutrition and physical …show more content…
Hipp’s class participate. The first component of our workshop was the physical activity portion, which included an exercise circuit that consisted of a warm-up, 5 stations, and a cool down. We had the WUHS students break up into groups of 5-6, and were accompanied by 3 Fresno State students while they completed the circuit. After the exercise circuit we moved inside of the church to conduct the healthy snacking portion of our workshop. During this time the students made two different healthy snacks, a fruit cup and a yogurt parfait. After the students assembled their snacks the Fresno State students were able to delivery additional nutrition education information to the students by going over our healthy snack brochure and physical activity flyer. I believe that our program was appropriate for the WUHS students because as mentioned earlier our needs assessment revealed that they needed to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables, consumed unhealthy snacks, and were interested in learning about nutrition and physical activity. Our workshop provided the students with an opportunity to consume fruits and vegetables, provided them with ideas for healthy snack options, and introduced them to a physical activity circuit that they can complete at …show more content…
The first challenge we faced was trying to schedule a day to hold our program that worked for the WUHS students, Mrs. Hipp, Dr. Herzig, and the nutrition 149 students because everyone has very busy schedules. While prepping for our program we had to estimate the quantities of all the food we needed, while staying within the budget Mrs. Hipp gave us. The day of our program we only had an hour to cut the fruits and vegetables and load them into our cars, which was very challenging to accomplish. Once we got to Washington Union we found out that we did not have the keys to the church, so we had to modify our original plan of having the exercise circuit inside the church. This ended up working out better because the students had more room to exercise, and we were able to prepare for the snack demo inside while the circuit was taking place. Another challenge we faced was that not all of the WUHS students were dressed in athletic clothing, which made the circuit less enjoyable for them. In the future we would ask Mrs. Hipp to remind the students to dress appropriately the day before. What made our program so successful was that our fellow 149 classmates were present and prepared for our workshop. We ensured that they were prepared for our workshop by holding a practice run, and by providing them with our collateral material in advance. Having the 149 students

As a student who regularly eats spends money for the food in the cafeteria, I would know what I have been eating regularly. Before presenting, I would’ve needed proper knowledge of the nutrition facts and health benefits of the regular foods served in the cafeteria. Additionally, the health benefits could support my appeal to logos, if I could properly present the fact that healthier foods could benefit the students. However, countering the school’s budget cuts is especially tricky.…

Household and school dietary choices will improve the performance of students at the charter school. Creating healthy dietary habits in children through the school system is a salient objective in our country; seeing over 1 in 6 children in America are considered obese according to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services data collected in 2010. This shockingly high number displays that obesity is not simply a condition that only adults live with. Malnutrition deprives a child of their daily nutritional needs; however, this does not mean that the child does not over eat. Eating over processed foods can create an excess amount of calorie intake without the needed nutrition of the child.…

Another the problem with this program is not that people care that it is healthy, but the food is unappetizing and this has led to food waste. Students have chosen to eat the better tasting parts of the lunch and throw away the fruits and vegetables. Again if you look at the whole purpose of the plan it is to cut portion sizes, limit calories, salt and other seasonings and add more fruits and vegetables. The fruit and vegetables is supposed to make up for the salt and other calories taken…

At Turlock High School, teenagers are at risk everyday, because of what the food they eat is doing to them. Most teens try to eat healthy, but fail to do so. Most of the teens at THS eat school lunch here, and wish they didn’t. This leaves them to buy fast food, or bring it from home. Even though many try to eat healthy, it’s not enough.…

The National School Lunch Program is a federal assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools a residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low cost, or free lunches to children each school day. The program was established under the national school lunch act, signed by President Truman in 1946. School Lunch In America

While this is important, the learning needs to start at school. Students spend a large majority of their day in school, with that, having healthy meals during this time is imperative to the children’s learning process. In addition, not every family is capable to provide their children with a bagged lunch every day. Therefore, the student could be getting their main source of food through the free and reduced lunches. Even with a healthy home, young kids need a guiding hand at school to help them to continue to make healthy choices during the school day.…

According to Truglio-Londrigan and Lewenson one strategy the public health nurse utilizes is outreach, “locating populations at risk and providing information about the nature of the concern” (2013, p.225). The population at risk is the children and the concern is their unhealthy food choices and inactivity. My proposal is to engage students after school in a physical activity and afterward introduce them to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables for a snack. People don’t focus on the fact that they are “exercising” when they are having fun. It would be important to expose the kids to a variety of physical activities to increase their participation with anticipation of what activity is in store for the afternoon.…

Late research shows companies who control the food industry make tens of billions of dollars which directly affects 1.5 million people. These corporations influence weight gain by marketing their products to be cheap and convenient while healthy food is not. Weintraub’s argument is parents are to blame for childhood obesity. I disagree for several reasons. To begin with, corporations price their food to be reasonably cheap, which I believe is not an accident.…

Over the course of this class, I have learned quite a bit about what it takes to actually eat healthy and take care of my body. Coming into this class, I thought that I had already figured out most of what I had needed to know. Very quickly, I started to realize that there is a whole lot more to eating healthy than I had thought. Being as health conscious as I am, I immediately found the class very interesting, as it is one of the only classes that I have ever taken that can actually be applied to life on the daily. That is why I found the “My Diet Analysis” project to be extremely interesting.…

From birth to adulthood kids are taught to live a sedentary lifestyle. During the day, these students are forced to sit for hours on end during school hours. These kids then go to lunch to eat an unhealthy, greasy, cholesterol filled meal. This lifestyle teaches children how to act as adults, wake up, go to work, sit for hours, eat junk food, then lather, rinse and repeat. Along with a basic exercise plan, all school students need to eat healthy foods to retain nutrients, and boost their metabolism until they need to use it again (“Unhealthy School Lunches Not Making The Grade”).…

The term “school lunch,” has had a negative connotation ever since I can remember. There’s much more to school lunch than gourmet salads or mystery meat. All over the United States schools serve lunch to a variety of different students, with different backgrounds, age groups and income. Just in one school the systematic arrangement of the lunch ladies and the policies set in place are just tiny specs of a much larger picture. The fact of the matter is, as children are developing they are being programmed and prepped for the rest of their lives.…
