Reflection: Improving My Relationship With Older Adults

Improved Essays
As a hopeful, speech pathologist, if I was to reflect back on the lifespan that I would feel most challenging in the health system, it would have to be older adulthood. Older adult hood would be difficult to work with as there are a range of issues that may arise or they already are dealing with, that could impact the care in which they accept or receive. This lifespan also has had more life experiences and therefore they may see the treatment that they are going to get as not right or they might feel uncomfortable because they might know someone who has been through the same scenario, and that persons’ treatment may not have worked or it took them a long amount of time to heal. Due to those life experiences they might think they have more knowledge about recovery and how to deal with themselves. Finally, due to my inexperience …show more content…
I personally feel that to improve my relationship with older adults is to familiarise myself with the way in they work such as thought patterns, behaviour and social behaviours. If I familiarise myself with these things then I will be able to apply them when working with older adults, which then a relationship between practitioner and client. To work with older adults, I could practice scenarios that may help with my understanding of this lifespan and this way I can change my behaviours to older adults. As I have not had many experiences with older adults except with my grandparents, so I could change my behaviour by engaging with them and find out way I can work with older adults by talking to them and observe their behaviour. Furthermore, I believe that if I work more with older adults, I would become more comfortable working with older adults that way I can grow my knowledge and apply that information to the older adults I will end up working with later

As in section 1.2, avoid discussing outside activities that may seem inappropriate for other professionals to hear, i.e, drunken nights out with friends! Upon completing interview one and two, I surmise that interviewing is not as easy as it appears. Whether it be asking questions to a stranger, friend, or a family member, there are still levels of discomfort because my role changes. I am no longer their friend who can talk in a causal manner, I have to contemplate and decide what questions to ask and how to prevent boundary violations. With friends and family, I often do not perceive this and conversations are more lenient. It was difficult to provide reflection without sounding hypercritical or appearing apathetic.…

If we don’t use reflection, we will never understand reasons why we do certain things or never be able to improve on previous experiences for the future. Reflection is essential in a care setting as situations are always arising, and we need to make sure we work to the best of our ability. This essay will be discussing the importance of reflection within personal and professional development and also the role of reflection in the provision of quality care within a care setting. Assisted Living Barriers

Being able to stay at home has been one of the many topics that my mother and father have addressed with me from an early age. Neither one of them expressed the desire to go to a nursing home or an assisted living facility. I am also so thankful that they are in good health. My father is 77 years old and continues to work in and around the home, despite some minor health issue like having both knees replaced a few years ago. He would probably stop thriving if the only option for him was to “age gracefully” in an assisted living facility or nursing home because of his age or health at the time of his knee replacements.…

Areas that I feel like I have improved in during this communications 101 course is becoming more confident in speaking in front of a small crowd, learning how to write speeches, and learning how to research and prepare for speeches. Everyone 's fear is public speaking. I avoided taking this class for the longest time just because I did not want to have to take a class where its entirety was just about speaking in front of people and doing a handful of speeches being my primary grade. I needed to take this class for when I transfer over to Arizona State University in the fall of 2017 so getting this class out of the way now at the University of Nevada was more of an ideal plan rather than taking it at ASU. This class is a core pre-requisite…

In matching Janet’s posture, language and tone, I reflected back to Janet her external behaviours. When I commented to Janet “and because you know that at the base of it’s not you it’s him” I put into my words her thoughts regarding his behaviour. Janet’s response of “well that’s the thing, I don’t let it affect me anymore…” allowed her to then explore why her reactions to her ex-husband had changed. I found this skill of counselling particularly difficult in this session due to our friendship.…

Both concepts however promote active and healthy aging. Older adults with better social network experience better emotional, mental and physical health; those who guide and nuture the younger generation derive satisfaction and motivation which also enhances the aging process. Both concepts are also useful in understanding grandparenting today as they underline the approaches and styles of grandparenting. Transition to grandparenthood now occur in midlife resulting in variation in age of grandparents, grandparenting approach and motive although it has been reported that the prime significance of grandparenting is biological renewal and/or continuity and emotional self fulfillment (Hooyman & Kiyak, p.361). While younger grandparents tend to use the involved or authoritative style of grandparenting, older grandparents use the remote and individualized…

For my reflective essay I have chosen to look at the challenges of working with older people in a health and human service setting and in particular how this would challenge me to work as an effective practitioner in the discipline of nutrition. In the last five years I have worked and spent time with older adults from different settings, some who are healthy and engaged in all areas of their lives, living independently and contributing to their community. I have also spent time with older adults who are determined to live out their years in their own home despite chronic pain, disease and social isolation and finally I have worked with older adults living in aged care facilities who have multiple conditions, prescribed multiple medications…

I had a training with the army, and that required me to absence from school for two weeks. Unlike my other class, I didn’t have a chance to work ahead of the class with the instructor for the two weeks that I would be missing. Therefore, I was worried that I wouldn’t catch up with my classmates and end up failing the class. However, Ms. Anna was generous and extended the assignment due date for me; she even gave me an extra-credit assignment to replace the credits that I missed during my two weeks in training.…
