I began looking at the state capitols of RedWood’s neighbors and came up with a design I thought spoke truths about the surrounding land while painting an accurate picture of its social history. The design was mainly based off the United States capitol building in Washington D.C. It would be a white building that would stand out from the surrounding green of trees and grass without being obnoxious. I chose a base similar to the Utah State Capitol that includes a symmetrical shape with columns surrounding the exterior. As for the façade I didn’t want a large stair case like Utah’s Capitol has, instead I chose the portico of California’s capitol which has several stairs leading to a grey granite front above which stand white pillars and a balcony area for the first floor. It is clear many capitols have ties to the area they reside in, however some completely ignore this ideology and instead choose a building to copy or create a rendition of. I decided to create a rendition of California, Utah, and Oregon’s capitol buildings because all of them are beautiful in their own distinct way. Picking and choosing things I liked from each building and then in turn trying to tie it to the land and the people who live in the area. I feel I have created a capitol the society of RedWood would enjoy while still being a fully functional government building.
