Reducing Organic Waste In The United States

Decent Essays
Every single year, more than half a billion tons of the food the world produces ultimately goes uneaten.
When we clear off our dishes after a large meal, we rarely think about the importance of our action. This kind of practices, unfortunately, makes it difficult for us to conceptualize the magnitude of global food waste.
Reducing this loss and waste will lead to food security, economic gains and environmental sustainability.
Food loss and waste costs the world up to $940 billion a year, so reducing it makes financial stability. A typical American family of four members amounts to 1,160 pounds of uneaten food yearly.
Every 1 out of every 9 people globally don’t get enough food every day and are undernourished.

Table to Trash “There is food for everyone on this planet, but not everyone eats,” exclaimed Carlo Petrini, the founder of a grassroot movement. Food is thrown out by regular people and big companies as if it is nothing, when in fact it’s almost worth its weight in gold to the hungry. Human nature stands in the way of getting unwanted food to those who need it. This paper talks about how a person’s routine adds to food waste; the impact food waste has on nature; and the laws that prevented the shipment of food to the poor.…

Some people in America witness the disposal of edible food. One may have seen their friends throw away half of their uneaten food in the trash at school or see their parents dispose the fast food that’s about a week old. These scenarios are considered food waste and this is one of the main problems that America faces. If this problem continues, eventually, “in forty years when you order a pizza from Domino’s, they’ll just deliver it straight to the nearest dumpster” (“Last Week Tonight”). There is tons of food that are wasted despite the fact that there are Americans suffering from hunger.…

When people think about food, they tend to think about where they get their food and what they eat. Most people don’t know that the average time food takes to get to the dinner table is almost 4, 200 miles. They also do not know how much environmental damage is being done to get the food to the supermarket that they buy from. Either that or they don’t care because the only concern for most humans is that they have food to eat. The process of producing the food to such a large population, however, is something that needs to be looked at through the lens of the Treadmill of Production theory.…

The world produces enough food today to feed all of its human inhabitants. The problem here is with the distribution and economic systems responsible for delivering and receiving payment for this food that is the problem. Many farmers are better off not growing their crops due to perverse or inadequate financial incentives under present systems, so a systematic change is almost more important than the increase of…

Inspired by a forsaken orange that sat in a North Carolina parking lot, Jonathan Bloom wrote American Wasteland to examine the growing problem of food-waste in America. I think Bloom did a tremendous job by presenting this looming issue. His numerous anecdotes pertaining to food-waste creates an innate sense of relatability, which in turn direct readers’ attention to the statistical and logical presentations of the issue. This is an impressive feat because Bloom avoided coming off as preachy or judgmental in a book that attempts to raise awareness of something that general Americans have already decided it’s not important (xvi). As a result, Bloom’s systematic way of examining every aspect of America's habit of wasting food comes off as interesting…

In the Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Food Waste (HBO), John Oliver discusses how much food Americans waste. He expresses how he is appalled and disgusted at the amount of food being wasted for various unacceptable reasons. Oliver makes a point to say that it’s not only affecting the hungry, but also the producers, consumers, and sellers. I do agree that Americans are wasting food because I and my family, waste a lot of food.…

It is estimated that nearly twenty-five to forty percent of the food grown in the United States is never eaten. Consequently, the amount of edible food left to decompose in farmer’s fields or taken to landfills is estimated at seventy billion pounds per year, while some American families struggle with food insecurity or hunger, edible food is being left to rot (feedingamerica.org). Of course, the human impact of discarded food is an important aspect, but many other issues surrounding food waste exist. Some…

In the article, “Food Security: The Challenge of Feeding 9 Billion People,” published on January 28, 2010, Charles Godfray asserts that because of the continuing growing population and the growth of food consumption, the demand for food will increase for at least 40 years due to the lack of certain factors which could prevent the issues being faced with the demand for food. Godfray supports his implication by supplying the reader with a variety of causes as to why the demand for food has continued to rise such as the yield gap, production limits, the change of diets, yet at the same time provides solutions to these certain complications which could reduce the demand for so much food. Moreover, Godfray wishes to convey the readers into understanding the importance of reducing the impact of the food system on the environment and the certain precautions or actions that can be taken in order to better the situation by creating a “multifaceted and linked global strategy” to…

There is no such thing as "away" when we throw anything away it must go somewhere. Many people throw out many items out every day after they use them into their garbage bin without stopping to ponder where all this trash goes, so it is no surprise that the earth is slowing turning into a huge trash can. Landfill waste poses a huge problem not only economically and environmentally but also because it takes up a lot of land due to its low decomposition rate. Reduce, reuse, and recycle are the most common methods used to reduce waste and should be implemented in every home and the waste that is left should be converted to clean energy through a landfill gas program. While most people consider themselves skillful at conserving and recycling, the truth is that most people take a trip to the landfill more often than they think.…
