In my local area there are a multitude of programs and resources dedicated to “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” For local residents one of the best places to start is the Brisbane City Council as they committed to the goal of zero waste. This means recycling as much as possible as well as putting systems in place to prevent waste being created in the first place. One example is Planet Ark, an Australian not for profit organisation dedicated to helping people and business reduce their impact on the environment. To to this they run many campaigns and work in tandem with businesses and governments to help change peoples behaviour and attitude towards the environment. An extremely useful website created by Planet Ark is recyclingnearyou.com.au which lets people know what items can be recycled and where to take them in their local area. Looking through the site there were many items I had not realised could be recycled such as corks, reading glasses, mattresses, medicines, x-ray films and polystyrene. Taking the items is colloquially know as “wombbling” so named after the characters 1970s British children’s television program. The practice is more common in some areas, in my experience Melbourne and areas with a lot of university students. than others as councils frown on the practice as it can look unsightly as well as being a danger to pedestrians. I have wobbled a few useful items over the years but have not put anything out preferring to donate to charities instead. This week I have learned that the terms ecosystem and biome although related and somewhat similar in fact refer to two separate things. The terms cannot an should not be used interchangeably. An ecosystem refers to a small area where different organisms interact with one another and their environment. An ecosystems can be either terrestrial or aquatic in nature. Where as a biome refers to a much larger geographical usually defined by the dominant plant species or climatic conditions Biomes may contain several
