It is a particularly small animal, with males weighing from 8.2 to 13.7 pounds, and females weighing from 6.6 to 13.2 pounds. They have long, soft, reddish-brown fur covering the exterior of their body and a lighter colored face with tear marks coming from their eyes. The red panda’s eyes are a dark, almost opaque, black color. Attached to their round shaped heads, are medium sized ears and a black nose to match their eyes. Their lengthy, thick tails do not have a simple color pattern. It includes six different yellowish red hues, which alternate to display an interesting pattern. The name for this patter is “transverse ochre rings” (Wikipedia). The tail of the red panda does not only look interesting, it also provides protection for this small, furry animal. It provides them with protection and camouflage. The red panda’s tail blends perfectly into their habitat of moss and lichen covered trees in the wild. Contrary to their tails, their legs are not a variety of interesting colors. The red panda has short, black legs with thick fur on the bottom of their paws. The reason for this thick fur is to keep their paws insulated in the cold climates that the red pandas are often roaming around in. Their fur also contains scent glands that help them survive in the wild. In order to strip their food source, bamboo, the red panda has strong, curved

The sesamoid bone of this species resembles that of a red panda which supports taxonomic relationship placing it in the Ailuridae family, the same as the red panda. The Simocyon batelleri fossils suggest that traits such as tree living environments and hyper carnivore diets were present (Glatston, 2010). This trait which is also included in giant pandas, noting they are a different species than that of the red panda, challenge the hypothesis whether the red panda and giant panda are actually related. This is because the presence of the pseudo-thumb found in the Simocyon, is not the only indicator of common ancestry between the two species, but structure of the teeth come into play as well. Fossil evidence shows that the diet of a Simocyon would have a more general carnivorous diet instead of an herbivorous diet that both red and giant pandas have.…
