Risks of Red Meat
Need to indent paragraphs The facts about red meat have only recently come into the limelight, for the wrong reasons. People find out more about the facts of red meat because of a growing health issue revolving around animal products leading to illnesses. It used to be widely believed that red meat was the only good source of necessary proteins and amino acids, but as research continues, more information surfaces on how red meat could actually be doing more harm than good. Research suggests an elevated risk of mortality when red meat is constantly consumed more than recommended. Data was collected from a controlled study done on both males and females regarding the patterns between consuming red meat and the overall risk of mortality. Frank B. Hu of Harvard wrote a paper titled “Red Meat Consumption and Morality” based on a the study of red meat consumption and mortality risks in men and women, showing the results of the study that concluded those in the highest quintile of red meat consumption were not as healthy and “less likely to be physically active...more likely to be current smokers, drink alcohol and have higher BMI.” (Hu) Those in the lower quintiles tended to live longer and be overall healthier. Red meat is the only source we have found so far that has complete proteins, which makes being a vegan or vegetarian difficult because they need to consume more types of vegetables in order to get all the protein that the body needs. Animal products such as meat also contain amino acids that the body requires to function, and going without those amino acids can cause damage to the body. Those that go without meat in their diet often have to take supplements or consume a larger quantity of vegetables in order to get the nutrients found in red meat that the body needs.
Even when looking at the good things that come out of consuming red meat, the negative effects far outway the positive. Complete proteins and amino acids doesn’t make up for the risk of prostate cancer, heart disease, and an early death. It isn’t worth all the health problems eating excessive amounts of meat can cause, but that doesn’t mean anyone has to cut meat completely out of their diet. Meat in small doses doesn’t have nearly as many risks involved and still provides complete proteins and amino
