I. Abstract The experiment was about using a method of recrystallization to reform benzoic acid and unknown compound, and identifying that compound. The main principle is the polarity and solubility of compound. The compound was dissolved completely with distilled water in hot temperature and reformed back in cold environment. After the experiment, there were up to more than 50% of the compound being recrystallized and the unknown compound had the melting point at 165.2oC. The experiment showed the connection of polarity and solubility of the compound in order to recrystallize.
II. Introduction A solid’s purification, when recrystallized with a solvent, is depending on the solubility of it in a given solvent. When the sample contains

Then we added 20 mL of DW to the flask and put it into a water bath. We used the stirring rod to stir the mixture up for completely dissolved. If the sample did not dissolve, we put more DW drop by drop using the dropper. When the sample was fully dissolved, we gently put the flask into an ice bath and wait until it recrystallized. We noticed not to move the sample around or it would break the crystals inside. After that, we filtrated the solution to get the crystals out. Using a funnel and filter paper, we poured the sample into the funnel, the crystal would be remain in the filter paper. Finally, we let the crystals dry and weighted it in order to determine the percent of …show more content…
An ideal recrystallization solvent should have these properties: - The compound is soluble in hot temperature and insoluble in cold temperature. The difference in at hot and cold temperature is very important to the process. Because when the solvent is insoluble in hot temperature, it will not dissolve result in cannot be recrystallized. - There are two phases to identify the unwanted impurities: dissolved form present in solvent at normal temperature or undissolved form in higher temperature. Therefore, the impurities will be taken out using the hot filtration when dissolving the impure solids. After the cooling process, the impurities will again be separated out by another filtration. - Do not let the solvent react with the substance, or resulting in loosing amount of desired compound during recrystallize process. - The solvent should have enough volatility in order for removing the sample after crystallization. It helps the drying process of the compound become easier and faster. [1] Why are crystals washed with additional solvent when collected? Why cold

Goals The goal of the lab was to investigate the properties and structure of an unidentified compound that was discovered in a local landfill. The group was called in to help determine the chemical and physical properties of the compound so we can let the people of the town know so it can be taken care of properly with or without further precautions to be taken. Another goal of this project was to devise the synthesis of the unknown compound. Experimental Design In order to determine the correct identity of our unknown compound, we first started with a couple preliminary tests, which include physical state and smell.…

The purpose of the experiment was about recrystallization of crude ASA from crude ASA, then analyze the yield and melting point of Recrystallized product, test for Purity of Recrystallized ASA by using thin layer chromatography and analysis of Recrystallized Acetylsalicylic Acid by Spectroscopy to compare these results with another experiment about creating an Aspirin from Salicylic Acid. In this experiment, 0.1241 gram of Recrystallized ASA was produced from 1.1754 gram of Crude ASA and the yield of reaction is 10.56%. This yield is lower than the yield by creating an Aspirin from Salicylic Acid because the crystallized product is purer because we did not add another chemical in. For the melting point of recrystallized ASA, Mel-temp was used…

In this experiment, the percent recovery values were 14.2% and 59.7%. The lower percent recovery means that only a small amount of crystals were recovered. This error could be due to the fact that some of the organic compounds may have formed hydrogen bonds and therefore been soluble in water resulting in the loss of some organic compound during filtration. Another reason for such a low percent recovery could be due to the drying agent. If the drying agent is added in large amounts it could lead to losing of the organic solvent by adsorption of the organic liquid.…

The aqueous layer was removed through the separatory funnel and placed in a 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask labeled “base.” The remaining solution present in the separatory funnel was removed from the top and placed in an Erlenmeyer flask labeled “neutral.” MgSO4 was added to the Erlenmeyer flask labeled “neutral” and set aside for 5 minutes to dry. The mixture is then filtered into a 58.4 g tared 100 mL round bottom flask, rotary evaporated, labeled “azobenzene” and placed aside to allow crude solid to dry.…

The choice of solvent is of utmost importance in a recrystallization so three small scale recrystallization “pilot” experiments will be carried out prior to purifying a larger amount of material. For these experiments acetone ethanol and hexane will be tested as possible solvents for the bezanilide-thiourea crude mixture. The desired solvent will dissolve the impurity (thiourea), and partially dissolve the compound to be purified (benzanilide) so that when heated, the crude compound is completely dissolved and by cooling the solution the benzanilide will recrystallize in its pure form with the impurity staying…

Fractional distillation is a common method for separating components of a mixture by utilizing their boiling points to aid in the separation. As a mixture is heated, the component with the lower boiling point in the mixture vaporize, while the higher boiling point component will remain in solution. These vapors will rise to a cooler area where they will condense and this liquid will then be collected; this is known as the distillate. Eventually, the lower boiling component will boil off, and the higher boiling point component will begin to travel up into the condenser as the temperature reaches the boiling point of the second component. As the second distillate is collected, it will mostly contain the higher-boiling component.…

After starting with 30 mL of an unknown mixture of two solvents, fractional distillation and gas chromatography were used to identify the unknowns as acetone and toluene in a 1 to 2.04 ratio of acetone to toluene. Fractional distillation was first used to separate the unknown mixture into its components based on boiling point. Distillation refers to the method of separating components of a mixture through heating and cooling. Simple distillation, which is especially useful in the separation of less-volatile substances from volatile substances, such as sugar from water, can be used to separate a liquid-liquid mixture if the boiling points of the component liquids differ by more than 40-50°C. A plot of temperature versus volume for a simple…
