As a recovery nurse, in a post anaesthesia care unit, I cared for patients, emerging out of general anaesthesia. Assessing for any potential complications with the patient’s airway, breathing, circulation, disability and exposure, as per the hospital’s recovery room protocol. This systematic approach, alerted me when the patient experienced any complications. For example, one patient’s vital signs were stable for the first two sets of observations. As per the hospital policy, I then removed the patient’s mask giving 2% oxygen and monitored if the patient could maintain 100% oxygen saturation, on room air.
