Though the protests inspired government intervention of construction of the pipeline, the concerns regarding pipeline use remains relevant. One of the main concerns of the construction of the DAPL is that if a burst or leak were to occur, it would result in the pollution of the Missouri River, a main water source for hundreds of thousands of people (Kirby). This concern is not unwarranted: The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) stated that the number of significant pipeline incidents grew 26.8% from 2006 to 2015 (Zukowski).
