Throughout history African American women have contributed greatly to society. One of the most notable African American woman is Rebecca Lee Crumpler. Ms. Crumpler was the first African American to earn M.D. Ms. Crumpler’s life, contributions, and impact have been significant to African American woman and society.
Rebecca Crumpler’s life experiences led her to become an important part of African American history. Ms. Crumpler was born in Delaware, to Absolum Davis and Mitilda Welder. Ms. Crumpler was raised by one of her aunts in Pennsylvania. Her Aunt spent much of her time caring for the sick. Crumpler made a great impact on the face of medicine and civil rights to all people. During her journey Ms. Crumpler had to work hard to prove her place in society and the hospital. Dr. Crumpler endured very harsh conditions, brutal comments and a lot of discrimination by most fellow physicians. Despite the harsh comments Ms. Crumple always managed to keep working to achieve her goals and expectations for herself. Most administrators would not readily grant her hospital privileges, and many pharmacist would question her prescriptions. Many physicians would say “The M.D. behind her name stood for nothing more than ‘Mule Driver’”. As a black female who grew up in a poor household with a single parent, the odds were against her. Despite growing up in a poor household and living in harsh environments, Ms. Crumpler proved the odds to be wrong.
Dr. Crumplers courage and dedication inspired many people worldwide. Sense becoming the first female African American to become a doctor, she has moved many women to become doctors and apart of the medical field. Many physicians have noted her dedication, skills and intelligence. Dr. Crumpler broke many barriers for medicine and the movement for African American women and their privileges.
