What made Gatsby great in the eyes of Nick was his ability to self-invent and the way he was able to make his hopes and dreams into a reality. Ironically this can be described as Gatsby’s ability to make his American Dream real. In the novel, Gatsby imagines an identity for himself and is actually able to create that identity and becomes exactly what he wanted to be, a wealthy man. But his pursuit of wealth is the very thing that corrupted him. Gatsby was willing to do anything to gain the wealth and social position that was needed to win Daisy back.…

The Great Gatsby’s narrator, Nick Carraway, states in the first pages of the book that “life is much more successfully looked at from a single window, after all”. In this paper, I will demonstrate that this sentence has a deeper meaning in the forthcoming events described in the novel and that Nick is not such a rational or trustworthy character as he claims to be. Paying close attention to the quote and analyzing it in detail, the narrator lets the reader know that life becomes simpler when there is just one perspective from which to tackle an issue or see the world. This is Nick’s perspective, the outlook of a well-educated person who has had many advantages in life. However, what the reader does not know is how would have been if Nick…

Most people were not actually invited to the party in the first place as you see in the quote on page 41 "I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby's house I was one of the few guests who had actually been requested to attend the party. People were not invited they went there.” The narrator, or Nick Carraway in this case, speculates about how almost no one is actually invited to Gatsby’s superb parties they just show up because they think that if they show up they will seem high class because they are socializing with the élite citizens of New York City around the West Egg area. People go to these parties and act like they belong there because they feel like they have to in order to be or become classified as part of the elites. The book shows another example of this on page 43 where Lucille says, “I like to come; I never care what I do, so I always have a good time.…

In the very beginning of the novel he says that “Only Gatsby… was exempt from my reaction- Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn”(2) when he was discussing his moral ideals. But he goes on further to say that he had “an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person”(2). Nick, throughout the novel, both heavily insulted and complimented Gatsby. We see through this that Nick always seemed to be unable to decide how he truly felt about Gatsby, and what he truly valued in life and in himself. Nick also stated, “Gatsby turned out alright at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men” (2).…

The author chose Nick for a reason, and that was because he was a newcomer to West Egg, not knowing anyone but Daisy. He chose this so that the reader could see the change that Nick had during the story. If the book was written in Tom Buchanan’s eyes, the thoughts toward Jay Gatsby would be entirely different and the title would not be The Great Gatsby. If it was written in Daisy’s eyes, the story would talk about how Gatsby in a more loving and scared kind of way, more like a deeper drama story. The title would definitely not be the way it is.…
