We have discussed who is a Child Soldier. Now, the more important question surfaces: Why do armed factions resort to use of children or why do children voluntarily enrol?
The reasons for this are manifold.
A.) INVOLUNTARY CONSCRIPTION
First coming to the reasons to why Children are enrolled contrary to what they may wish.
a.) The rebel groups more frequently resort to the use of child soldiers, as these groups often revolt against the current regimes. Now the adults may have already been recruited into the armed forces. To combat this deficiency in their ranks they resort to abduction of children.

It treats voluntary enlisting as coercion.
The International Community treats the reasons for joining as poverty, instinct to survive, youth demographies and parental and peer pressure.
A significant proportion of Children, however, themselves come forward for recruitment.

A 2002 UNICEF report called Adult Wars, Child Soldiers: Voices of Children Involved in Armed Conflict in the East Asia and Pacific Region, revealed that among the interviewed Children, close to 60% of them confirmed to having joined of their own wish. In sharp contrast, not even a fourth claimed to have been dragged into it.
Despite this, the conclusion drawn by the UNICEF is that they were forcibly recruited.
Similarly, a survey of former Democratic Republic of Congo Child Soldiers indicated that extremely few were forced to join. Over 50% of the Children wished to join willfully. The objective of such is to impart knowledge, skills and experience. From the very basic training to advanced leadership and tasks involving technical potent, they are given all sorts of training. A due regard is had to their capabilities. The purpose of such training is to imbibe in them the norms, culture, values and beliefs of the force/ group.
The Children irrespective of whether they are forcibly recruited or voluntarily recruited are given the same training.
The training given to Children, however, with due regard to their age may be considered inhuman and grueling.
As the authors of Human Rights Watch’s 2003 report, “You’ll Learn Not to Cry: Child Combatants in Colombia,” write that the State and non-State groups both teach the children to teach the opposing group without a shred of mercy. They are instructed to kill or torture the opposite sides. They are taught to have absolutely no regard to the Human dignity of the members of the opposite group.
