Rear Admiral Grace Hopper Essay

Improved Essays
Rear Admiral Grace Hopper made one of the most significant impacts on the field of Computer Science and programming ever through her work both in and out of the Navy. Hopper’s most memorable and well known contribution she made occurred while she was working at Harvard, and found a moth inside of a Mark II computer, shorting it. This moth is the source of the common term “computer bug” still used today. However, the field of Computer Science would be almost identical today, even if the term “bug” never came into use, so this term is one of the most inconsequential of Hopper’s contributions to the field.

Hopper’s most significant contribution to Computer Science occurred in 1952, when she and her team at Harvard created the first compiler, the “A compiler”, which two years later led to the release of the compiler based languages MATH-MATIC and FLOW-MATIC. Hopper later worked as a technical consultant to the committee that created COBOL. Many of the members of this committee were formerly Hopper’s employees. Even though Hopper did not create COBOL herself, it was still a widely used language that existed due to Hopper’s earlier work. Today, even though COBOL has fallen largely out of use, other more common languages, including Java, C, C++, and many more are all influenced by Hopper’s work due to their use of compilers.

The US Navy, where Hopper worked on and off until she was nearly 80 years old, along with promoting her to Rear Admiral, awarded her with the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, which is the highest non-combat decoration which can be awarded. Hopper was also awarded the National Medal of Technology in 1991, the first woman to receive it. Organizations and events have also been named after her, including the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women In Computing Conference. Without Grace Hopper’s work the world would look extremely different to everyone, programmers and non-programmers

The book Blown to Bits by Hal Abelson, Ken Ledeen, and Harry Lewis has often given me the impression that this book was intended to warn its audience of the many dangers of technology, and that the benefits of using technology are not worth the risks. The book’s third chapter, “Ghosts in the Machine,” however, was different, because I noticed that the authors were just giving information about things that computers do that people may not realize, but not necessarily implying that all of these abilities are dangerous or harmful. For this reason, and for many other reasons, I enjoyed reading this chapter of Blown to Bits more than I have enjoyed reading any other chapter so far. The first topic discussed in this chapter left me with feelings of both concern and relief.…

She also has contributed much to science and engineering. According to Jason Roberts of NASA, “She is a co-inventor on three patents and author of numerous technical papers in the area of optical information processing,” Even though only 12.9% of engineers are female, she proved that any person of any race or gender can be influential to science. For her work, she has received many honors, some of which include the Women in Aerospace Outstanding Achievement Award, HENAAC Engineer of the Year, Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award, as well as NASA’s highest award, the Distinguished Service Medal. Daisy Buchanan It is often said that frustrating characters make the most compelling characters. Daisy Buchanan from F. Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby, is most certainly a frustrating character, but does this make her a compelling character? In my opinion as a reader, yes. Another reason I chose computer science is because computers are shaping the direction our world takes and I want to play a part in that. The idea of writing a program that helps a physicist decode the secrets of the universe or a doctor discover a cure for a serious disease holds great appeal for me. Computer science is a continually growing field and with computers becoming involved in almost every aspect of our lives it should remain so for the foreseeable future. Thanks to computer chips imbedded in everything from basketballs and shoes to computer-controlled thermostats more and more computerized data is being produced daily and to manage the acquisition, storage and use of this data will require computer scientists [1]. While sending jobs overseas will slow some aspects of computer science-related job growth overall computer science jobs are expected to continue growth through 2020 [3], [4], [5].…
