In the article “ The Science of Success”, the author, David Dobbs, uses a metaphor to help explain the personalities of people who may be influenced by the genetics they were born with. David states in the article “most of us have genes that make us as hardy as dandelions: able to take root and survive almost anywhere. A few of us, however, are more like the orchid: fragile, but capable of blooming spectacularly if given greenhouse care.”…

Failure is not an option. This is a comment often spoken by “driven” individuals. After reading Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Dr. Carol S. Dweck, it is clear that these individuals fall into the growth mindset. Dweck’s book explains that individuals from adolescents to adults fall into two categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. In a fixed mindset, people believe that their basic qualities, like intelligence or talent are simply fixed.…

Her book gives great insight on what it takes to build a successful team, and the best coaching mechanisms to aid in the process of building a great team. She also tells her faults as a coach, and how she learned to handle every team she coached over the years, with the principals she talked about in each chapter of her book. The advice she gives can not only be applied to a team setting but to life as well. The experiment consists of two parts. First, we need to randomly select children from low income families and randomly assign them into two groups: A and B, recording their fitness like BMI data. Second, we have to manipulate one and the only one independent variable which is the presence versus the absence of exercise and measure the dependent variable which is the children’s BMI data. To be specific, we keep one group of children do exercise every day and another group be more sedentary as well as control all other conditions or variables equal. Also, to avoid the experimenter expectancy effect and the placebo effect, we should let other researchers assign the groups without knowing which one is the experimental group or control group by ourselves.…

Everyone’s notions of success differ because individuals perceive success based on their own experiences with various environmental influences. As analyzed by Carol S. Dweck in her article “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success”, there are two main mental outlooks that affect people that are classified as growth and fixed mindsets. Dweck states that people with fixed mindsets identify success as a result of their inherited intelligence, and the ability to avoid failure at all costs. Hence, a fixed mindset is the belief that one’s skills are carved in stone rather than practiced and nourished. In contrast, a growth mindset seeks challenges and views failures as an opportunity to grow and develop better skills, and that failure is not evidence…

As Brink Lindsey states in his article “Culture of Success,” the main reason why many low-income high school graduates do not go to college is based on how they were raised, like how much time the parents/guardians. Though I can identify how we could make this assumption under unreliable statistics, however I strongly disagree with the idea of how well you raise your children is solely dependent on your family's income. As a young scholar, I find Lindsey’s article to be interesting and not helpful, but it is not something that I would aimlessly call fact. Brink Lindsey starts his article by addressing the problems on why people are not going to college. The author explains that the problem was started from our culture progressing too…
