Readmissions can become costly for hospitals. According to Tahhan et. al, (2017) many vascular surgery readmissions transpire from medical comorbidities and the majority of these are not related to surgical complications. It is important that individuals are able to manage their chronic illness before undergoing any type of surgery. Many patients have a difficult time understanding how to care for a new illness and as nurses it is our job to give these people the skills and knowledge needed to care for themselves. Education should be provided for surgical patients before, during and after the operation to ensure that they are well aware of how to care for themselves once they leave the hospital.
