1. Tell me about a piece of literature (novel, short story, play, poem, personal essay) that you read recently (even if it was in high school). Explain what it was about, why you read it, how carefully you read it, and what you got out of it. (approx. 150 words)
A text that I have read recently was called ‘Words on Bathroom Walls’ by Julia Walton. It’s about a boy, Adam, who has schizophrenia, written from his perspective in the form of a diary. It tells us about his hallucinations and their effect on him as he finds love, goes through high school, and understands the idea of being schizophrenic. I read it because, when I was looking through the book store, it had the most intriguing title and cover. Then reading the blurb it told me that it was about a schizophrenic boy, and thought ‘Why not read it, it’s something different’. I read it with an understanding that I didn’t know anything about schizophrenia, thus I paid close attention to the detail within it and become captivated by it. I understood from the book, that it’s not easy living with a mental illness, and though it may be easier to keep it a secret, it can hurt the ones you love most.
2. Now explain …show more content…
Try to remember the last time you didn't finish reading a book, either for pleasure or for study. Explain (as thoughtfully and clearly as possible) what stopped you from getting to the end. (about 100 words)
It’s rare for me to not finish a book, even when I don’t like it. One book I remember not finishing was ‘The Golden Compass’ by Philip Pullman. The reason I didn’t finish the book was when I started reading it, I found it dull. I remember I only got 4 chapters in, and then put it down as it wasn’t interesting and I didn’t like the style of writing. I was 8 at the time, which I think had a part to play in why I didn’t finish it, I also had more fascinating books to read on my bookshelf at the time.
