Reading Interdependency

Mary is a fifth grade student who is having troubles with reading. Mary’s teacher has indicated that Mary has been having difficulties with keeping pace with the other students while reading, completing homework and classroom assignments, and with reading comprehension. Mary’s teacher has made note that Mary is a very pleasant student who is good with following directions and gets along well with other classmates. Mary is having difficulty in reading, writing, social studies, and science. Currently Mary is performing below her classmates in reading reading fluency and reading comprehension. The teacher began noticing problems in the fall semester so the goal will be for Mary to improve by the spring semester. Currently Mary is performing on …show more content…
The intervention for Mary’s reading fluency will be for the teacher to have Mary partner up with one of the stronger readers in the class during their independent reading time. The independent reading time is where Mary is having the most trouble and so having her work with a partner reading aloud would be useful. Having Mary come up and check with the teacher during independent work time to make sure she is understanding the assignments should be part of the intervention as well. While Mary is at home with her parents or siblings or both Mary should read to them for about a half an hour so she is getting in reading time and practice while not at school. For the reading comprehension I think it would be good for the teacher to create a graphic organizer for Mary for the subjects she struggles in. The book notes in Figure 5.8 a visual graphic organizer will better help Mary organizer her thoughts. The book also notes the term content enhancement which is a better way to have an interactive curriculum. Giving Mary some different worksheets that will help her build more vocabulary and understanding of the text is also a necessary part of the
