The First Thing I Learned from Issue 3 in the book Understanding Rhetoric Every essay has a massage which might be for the good or bad of the people and every author’s goal is to make people read, understand, and believe his message in that essay. However, sometimes the wrong tone could make a great author look like a fool where a different tone could make him sound more interesting. The superhero in the book Understanding Rhetoric called the tones as “outfits” which can be changed based on the situation. To continue of the idea of “outfits” the superhero analogy was for every event we were different outfit; same for tones.…
What Is Discourse Community? What is the meaning of a discourse community? A discourse community is a set of people who have a different way of communicating than others. Those groups of people usually have very similar values and assumptions as well as ways of communicating with each other about those goals.…
“A discourse community is a group of people who share similar goals or purposes and use communication to achieve these goals” (Swales 220). Discourse Communities are thought to have six characteristics according to John Swales in his excerpt “The Concept of a Discourse Community.” Swales stated that “These characteristics being the community has a set of common goals known to the public, mechanisms for communication, mechanisms to provide feedback, has one or more genres of communication, an acquired specific lexis, and a level of members with relevant expertise to this content” (Swales 221). “Keys to Success” is the name of a learning community for first year freshmen offered at the University of Memphis. I am a part of this community, in…
My discourse community is Christianity. My discourse community involves people who believe in God and follow the guidelines of the Bible. The people from this community are trying to enhance themselves by learning the Bible. An impeccable member attends church, strive for better lives, and aim to help others spread and disseminate words of wisdom. There are several reasons why Christianity is a discourse community.…
In the past the definition of discourse communities has been somewhat unclear he believes the ideas came from several leading “social constructionist” of our time (217). To find what he believed are the requirements to be a discourse community he researched the origin of the phrase discourse community and how the term came about. Among other rules he states the community should have a common set of goals, use different forms of communication to achieve them, and a specific set of words unique to their group. When reading through Swales article my first impression was the criteria for a discourse community was a bit exclusive yet the more I re-read the rules the easier they became to understand and apply to almost every group you can imagine. Swale gives us an excellent example of how a group he is a part of, The Hong Kong Study Group, which is a group that is all about Hong Kong stamps.…
Discourse communities come up and are made because a group needs a place where they can have shared need for rules regarding their use of language in their communities, this is why most communities come up in the workplace. In my case, mine occurred in my school. A teacher at my school felt that more people needed to become more familiar with the students with disabilities. We wanted to create a better way of communicating with others that were outside of our discourse community in hopes that people would become more comfortable talking and connecting with people with certain disabilities. Joining this discourse community pushed me into the education field and without this teacher…
In his article “What is literacy?”, James Paul Gee maintains that the definition of discourse: “a socially accepted association among the ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or ‘social network’”. In the reading, discourse talk into production of goods in a society “dominant discourse” and assent to talk about those groups that have disagreement when using them as “dominant groups”. When people discuss something with other, they are not using their own ideas. At the same time, he goes on to explain that there are many points can make about discourse, such as the direction and significant in term. Important to realize, the author organizes discourse that…
During the first few weeks of ENG 1301, we’ve learned the significance of learning rhetorical skills while writing; specifically, the rhetorical triangle - also known as ethos, pathos, and logos appeals. Whether you need to beg your parents for more gas money, or you want to receive a raise from that revolting fast food chain you’re forced to work at to pay college tuition, these appeals are the foundation of persuasion and can move an audience in any which way the author pleases to do so. In order to be accepted into a community, one must deeply understand the overall purpose and interests of the group. Once this happens, you’ll be able to intuitively understand the discourse community’s way of communicating and interacting with one another.…
Discourse Community Paper Communication is the basic element in any society. We communicate in different aspects of our lives through different forms of communication such as letters, spoken, visual, and more suitable for the different discourse communities we belong to. Each discourse community has its own rules; they have their language, topics of interest, and characteristics that make them unique. In this essay I will describe the four major discourse communities I belong to: my family, friends, the academic community, and my football group. Family is the most important discourse community in my social and personal life.…
A discourse community utilizes its participatory methods specifically for the provision of information and feedback. As a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in social work, with the hope of obtaining a master’s degree in the same, I will move through multiple threshold concepts within my discourse community. I will analyze the ways in which social work is a discourse community and the influence my degree program at Washburn University will have on my future in social work. A threshold concept is an area in which one learns what they need to do in order to be part of a discourse community (Wardle and Downs, 2014, pp. 1-11). A discourse community is a community that shares common goals, beliefs, lexis, and genres (Swales, 1990, pp.…
For the last few weeks our class has been discussing what it means to be a discourse community as well as what it means to be a part of one. I am writing this paper to impart upon the fellow students in our class, as well our professor that I not only understand the meaning on a discourse community but that I also have been a full-fledged member of one myself. To further verify the extent of my membership I also am able to show the ethos, logos, and pathos that I encountered while within my discourse community over the past year. The discourse community in which I was a part of was show choir, the varsity choir at my high school. It was my junior year in high school when I decided that I wanted to join and at the time I did not know how to join and decided that I should I ask director how to do so.…
Nearly everyone is part of a discourse community, most of the time, multiple discourse communities. However, the majority of people do not even know what a discourse community is. A discourse community can consist of any of the following including, but not limited to, particular academic fields, religious organizations, and hobby groups. Discourse communities have the power to influence and shape the way many individuals think and behave. The particular discourse community I have chosen to analyze is my sorority, Delta Gamma.…
The discourse community which I investigated was from a site called sherlockforum.com. This site is very popular especially for the series Sherlock, since it has all of the episodes and then discussions on each one. I loved watching this show and I watched the first two episodes, so when I realized that one of the questions asked me to investigate one discourse community I was very excited to see other people's views on the show and how they compare with mine. I ended up investigating the discourses on “A Study in Pink”, which is the title of the first episode. This discourse has 465 replies and 14,193 views, but is not very popular anymore because it has been 6 years since the release of the episode.…
