Lupe kept Eddie in control, and together they had a respecting relationship. When Eddie decided to write poems, Lupe was a big supporter of him, and encouraged him to become a writer saying he, “should be a writer because if you can write something that makes people cry you have the gift.” (pg. 76). Ms. Beecher joked about Eddie becoming a teacher himself, and the joke made Eddie think about becoming a teacher and that he would let his students write whatever they wanted. All of the events that happen to him and his environment give him the need to read and write. By reading and writing, he expressed his feelings and understood other people’s feelings, too. He also tried to get his cousin, Enrique, to read and write as well to help him with his situation, but he failed. In the end Eddie decided to also share his poem at the poetry reading, and although he was reluctant at first, he read his poem “Veinte-Veinte Vision” and felt like he could hear the sound of a heron flying above him into the sunrise from the ovation.
