Students enter the classroom with a foundation knowledge that they have obtained during their brief years of life. This knowledge will color all the learning they will obtain throughout their lives (Wadsworth, 2008). Teachers can use books related to their content area in other subjects, such as science and social studies, to create a more full understanding of the subject area. Some of the knowledge gained in these subjects will become part of the students’ permanent background knowledge and continue to be used throughout their lives. Building this background knowledge will also promote future learning.
In conclusion, reading aloud is a necessary component of the everyday classroom that cannot be replaced. A teacher reading to her classroom can create a better understanding of the subject area, promote phonemic awareness, and build her students’ vocabulary, as well as many other positive uses for this necessary content area. Armed with the knowledge of reading aloud being such a great educational tool, teachers should understand the great importance of reading to their students
