Raymond carver is a unique short story writer and is mostly known by students because of one of his great stories called “cathedral”. Some might say that he was the most influential writer of American short stories in the second half of the 20th century. Raymond Carver was born on may 25th, 1938 in clatskanie, Oregon. Carver had a very unique life as a child dealing with many family issues such as dealing with financial struggles, seeing his dad always leave his presence, and an unsteady lifestyle. Carvers father was a sawmill worker, fisherman, and a heavy drinker. Carvers mother was a waitress and a retail clerk. Carver was not their only child; his only brother, James Franklin carver was born in 1943. everything from his childhood influenced his writing since he was drawn into the art of literature at a young age. Though writing stories was his passion, carver worked many jobs throughout high school. After carver graduated from Yakima high school, he married a girl by the name of Mary Ann Burk. She eventually gave birth to a girl named Christine La Rae, and a boy named Vance Lindsay. In order to support his family carver would work many jobs such as a high school English teacher, salesperson, administrative assistant, and waiter.
