Describe how over extracting raw materials causes global pollution

Pollution is when pollutants (usually green house gases) are released into our atmosphere and contaminate it. Green house gases are the pollutants that are commonly known for contributing to global warming.

When extracting raw materials from our earth we do more damage than we think, in order to build our desired project we must take our materials from the earth. This process is known as the extraction of raw materials In order to acquire the materials that you use for building, you must first extract them from their source. In order to do this you must either use quarries or a mine. Some of these materials will include rock, stone, brick, concrete, cement or iron. Without

As you can carbon dioxide is a very small percentage and in 2010 it wad recorded as 0.039%, however due to the extraction of raw materials and other factors, this figure is expected to double within the next 100 years.
Things such as land cleaning, diesel engines, demolition, burning and working with toxic materials will cause pollution to the environment. All of these things are used when extracting raw materials. E.g. diesel is responsible for the emissions for Carbon Monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and the most known pollutant, carbon dioxide. Dust from site can gather and travel throughout the atmosphere for a long period of time, polluting the atmosphere on its

Once oil is in the water it immediately gets to work destroying sea life, removing the fur off life such as otters and making it practically impossible for them to survive the cold. These animals can’t maintain their natural body temperature and will eventually die of hypothermia. Again sea life can then eat stuff containing oil, this has effects on the such as adult fish growth will be limited and reduced, it will also effect their heart and respiration rates and can also cause their fins to erode and reproduction will be severely affected. Sources of water pollution on a construction site include things like diesel, oil, paints and harmful solvents and chemicals. When land is cleared, soil erosion is caused, this soil erosion leads to silt-bearing run-off and sediment pollution. Silt and soil then run into natural waterways, doing this makes them muddy (turbid) this then reduces the amount of sunlight that can be filtered into the water and results in the destruction of any surrounding aquatic life. Surface water run-offs can also carry other pollutants such as diesel and toxic chemicals such as cement. That yet again when consumed by an animal’s will result in death. These pollutants may also soak into groundwater which is a water source for humans, once they have become polluted they are much harder to clean compare to surface water. When it comes to the construction industry you will

The oil spill will also pollute the ecosystem, altering the overall health of the communities in this ecosystem such as, the rainforest, the mangroves and the tidal flats. Oil spills can affect animals and plants in two ways: form the oil its self or the clean up method. The oil can affect the organisms internally from being absorbed, inhalation or ingestion and externally from irritation of skin and eyes, as it is extremely poisonous and can also suffocate the animals (Response and Restoration, 2016). The oil also flats on top of the water and as it is a dark, thick suntanned, it prevents any sunlight passing through the water which ultimately affects any organisms solely relying on the sun’s energy, such as producers like plankton or sea grass. These producer use sunlight as there source of food through photosynthesis, and without these producers, the consumers in the food chain have nothing to feed off resulting in a decrease in organisms and can prove fatal for…

Located in northeastern Alberta (Pasqualetti 2009, p. 248) are the “largest oil-sand deposits in the world” (Pasqualetti 2009, p. 250). The Alberta oil sands provide a necessary resource that is valuable to the Albertan and Canadian economies. The oil sands have received ample attention in recent years from the media and from various environmental agencies and groups due to “growing concern about a range of environmental impacts” (Jordaan 2012, p. 3611). These concerns are not without merit, as the ongoing development in the Alberta oil sands pose a significant threat to the environment.…

Land pollution ties into water pollution because the ground absorbs the manure and contaminates any nearby water sources with manure. The Pew Charitable Commission, a non-profit government organization, published a press release on the environmental destroying pollutions caused by factory farming. (“Pew Commission”). The evidence is infinite that the techniques factory farms are using are polluting much of the world’s water and little has been done to regulate the ways factory farms operate to stop any pollution for that matter. With so much manure and only so much land to absorb it there is excess run off that pollutes nearby water sources and is destructive not only that it’s now contaminated water, but aquatic animal life is destroyed (“Pew Commission”).…

Oil in or on the water is extremely hurtful to wildlife. For example, if an animal lands in an area with oil it may try to clean itself in the toxic petroleum. Doing this can cause an animal to ingest the oil and damage internal organs and the reproductive system. Even if the oil does not kill the animal instantly it can cause long term damage and result in deformed offspring. Immediate impacts of oil are it could get coated into birds' feathers such as cranes or seagulls which causes them to lose their buoyancy and their ability to regulate body temperature, mammals could ingest the oil which can cause internal bleeding and ulcers, and it covers sea turtles' shells easily.…

climate does change, it is almost always in relation to the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. According to Howard Lee, a geologist who writes for a website called skeptical science, stated that the earth 's climate has abruptly risen in the past, as it is doing today. He also says that these abrupt rises in earths climate has always been destructive for life on earth, causing mass extinction. The Permian period is an example of this. The Permian period is also known as the great dying because 90% of earths life was wiped out by a sudden release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.…

Oil Spills and How They Affect The Environment Oil spills, no matter how small or large, effect the worlds environment by their destroying and poisoning any habitat they come in contact with, mainly the water though. These spills can be devastating because they disrupt what we know as the food chain. The food chain starts with producers who are ate by small animals which are ate by larger and larger animals until the top predator is reached, humans. Oddly enough, humans are the main reason the food chain is being destroyed. In our fight to reach economic prosperity we rarely take in consideration the environment, which is partially what life is based on.…
